I have generally eaten pretty healthy for the past 6 years and have been very diligent about keeping my weight where I want it. However, I quit smoking in August and subsequently gained 10 lbs - it just got away from me. I spent 6 weeks eating very healthy, low cal, low fat, low carb, etc, and then i switched to Keto and was on it for almost 2 weeks when I hit my goal weight 2 weeks ago (8 week’s total to lose the 10 lbs.) Dropped Keto diet. I ate 1 meal only for 3 straight days, but involved plenty of carbs. (Not excessive at all, but compared to keto, it was.) I got on scale after the 3 days, and much to my dismay, I had put back on 5 pounds! Wth!!! So now, I’ve been back on Keto for a week and hit my goal again yesterday. My clothes fit perfect again, and i look back to my old self. I want to just go back to my normal healthy diet that I had before I quit smoking, but I can’t figure out how to get off Keto without gaining the weight right back. Everything I’ve seen online seems so conflicting. Anyone have any tips?

Reintroduce carbs slowly, one at a time. Track the effect on your weight. If weight stays stable, try more.

Do you know what would be considered slowly? I feel like I’m stuck on keto indefinitely now. Ha.

Sorry, I reread your comment, and you did clarify what “slowly” meant. When you say “one at a time”, do you mean that literally? Like 1 extra carb per day? I have been researching online again today, and the info is so conflicting and confusing! I’m still in Ketosis now, have been keeping my net carbs about 10 net grams/day for the past week. I was going to aim for closer to 15-20 today. I believe that would still keep me in Ketosis too. I figured after a couple more days of that, I could break Ketosis and move up 5 grams every couple of days to see how I do? Does that sound right? Thank you!

Hi Laurayl, Do you have any of the Atkins books? They give guidance for adding carbs. I suggest you add one carb food, then monitor 3 days to see how you feel and the effect on your weight. If no issues, keep it in your diet / grocery list. Then try the next carb. Any that cause issues, take off your list for now and try again in 2 or 3 weeks if it's something you really like. Basically. you are testing for sensitivities to carb foods, a bit like checking for food allergies.
