mskestrela's Journal, 25 June 2016

Welp. I have come to the conclusion that the reason I'm not seeing the dramatic drops for myself that I'm seeing for others on the Beast Challenge is that I have been holding on to my evening cocktail with a death grip. I assumed that since rum has 0 carbs, that it wouldn't affect my macros, throw me out of ketosis, or slow fat loss. Turns out, the first 2 are correct, the third is not.
It turns out that the body will burn the alcohol first, and then get back to burning fat. *Sigh*
How many freaking ways can I self-sabotage, especially when I don't have all the data?
So, starting with the new Beast 2.0, I will be alcohol free.
Why don't I start today? Because just as I had to mentally psych myself up to start this LCHF lifestyle, knowing it would be for life, I have to do the same to let go of a 20+ year nightly ritual of a rum and coke (or 2) to "unwind".
I'm not saying I'll never drink alcohol again, but if I want to make the changes in my body, I have to break the daily ritual. Save it for special occasions. Bonus: My tolerance will go down, so I'll be a cheap date! LOL

Aw, yeah....those evil midnight munchies! I feel ya, Smarty! I was never big on the green...my addiction took me in the speedy direction. Danced the night away for too many years. I was skinny, but not healthy. Hang in there, baby. We all end up in the same place. ;)

Smartygirl are you talking about those little green aliens? Apparently I live a dull and boring life and miss out on all the fun. I rarely drink anymore, except for the occasional old fashioned extremely expensive sipping liquor.

@smarty... I almost made my username MJMadeMeFat! :'D

Caterpillar- such a funny username if you actually do it if something ever happens to your current FS account! Phil- yes those darn green aliens keep invading my house!

Mskestrela- I've been there done that in my early twenties- it's one of the hardest addictions to beat. I take that back, food is the hardest to beat!

We all have our little alluring demons. So delightful and hard to resist. We mourn them when we have to face giving them up. Part of being human.

You're right about that, @Erika! I did go through a mourning when I decided to give up grains, especially wheat. I'm not giving up booze, just taking a break, and re-configuring my relationship with it. ;)

Oh Kes... I feel your pain. A glass of red wine is how I have relaxed every night for a couple years before LCHF No drunken slop fests, just a glass (or two) of cab. I miss it, although, still enjoy it a one or two nights a week. Also mix it up with a little vodka soda on the weekends. I went about 3 weeks without any and it was fine... but it sure is nice to build it back in...in moderation. (no sarcastic comments Phil, LOL)

Vodka, freaking yuck, why don't you just top your soda off with rubbing alcohol? I read that vodka is the #1 selling distilled spirit in the United States. That's just sad and wrong.

I just started LCHF May 1 and have the Keto strips to ensure I'm in ketosis. My main motivation was when my man was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in March after a scary ER visit. So far, his blood sugar has dropped an average of 100 points and we both have lost around 15 pounds. We are waiting for A1C results which I'm sure will be lower. I just wanted to comment and say it's refreshing to see the community support on this site. This has not been the experience with other weight loss support groups I've been in. Best wishes to you on your journey.

No, thanks. I can't do brown. It makes me stupid.

@ImLaura, thanks sweetie! I'm actually looking forward to the adventure of another experiment. What's life for, if not to play?

@Fatswatter, I agree! So many of us have been through so many things. It builds compassion, and community. I'm so happy that you and your guy have found a solution through LCHF. Let the revolution reign!

@Phil, play nice on my threads! LOL. I'm a fan of dark rum, bourbon and other brown fluids...but to each his own! I have fond memories of sitting around a campfire with a great group of folks and several bottles of Stoli. But for now, it's all off the table. And, BTW......scotch.....ewwwwwwwwwwww!

Oh Phil....don't knock it till you've tried it. :) Grey Goose L'orange, club soda, and splash in some grapefruit juice and squeeze in a lime. So refreshing on these hot nights! My kids drink whiskey and have tried to get me to like it...yuck. This old doggie ain't up for learning any new tricks. LOL
