MPSARGE's Journal, 12 March 2016

Today is what I call a "cheat day". When your on a LCHF diet, you should have 1 day a week that you call a "cheat day". On this day you may have alittle more carbs and a few extra calories. For example I'm having 100 calories and 10 carbs extra then usual. The reason for this so called "cheat day" is to keep your body honest and from reaching a plateau. Basically, it's a way of saying to your body "I'm in control and at anytime I can change things up". It keeps the body guessing and not able to figure out what your doing. Hence being able to lose the weight you want without a plateau.....Today's qoute::::

When we make progress quickly, it feeds our emotions. Then, when there's a period of waiting or we hit a plateau, we find out how committed we really are and whether we're going to see things through to the finish or quit.

Thanks Sugar...Think the quote hit it on the nose. When things get tough or you feel like your never going to reach that point it does become a true test of our character. It's a test of will our mind & heart tell us to quit or have the strength to pursue on....

I've always thought you should have a cheat day -- or at least a cheat meal -- no matter what diet you're on. I used to really enjoy my "splurge meal" -- usually on Friday or Saturday night. But since I developed IBS, there's so little I can splurge on it's not as much fun. Today, my big splurge was hash brown potatoes with cheddar and ham. This is about as wild and crazy as I can get. Nonetheless, I encourage everyone to do one meal a week when you eat whatever you want, especially if you have a long journey ahead. It gives you something to look forward to...

Cheat days and low carb do not mix. One reason to do something other than that and something you can live with forever with no cheat days. Just a plan for life.

I'm was planning a cheat day for my birthday, but I've pushed that back to my one-year-on-plan anniversary in June, it will be the first since I started, if I decide to do it which is doubtful at this point.

What is a cheat day??? Your plan should be your plan and be an overall part of your life.....no cheat days just simply part of your plan. No cheat days just your plan. Life happens, life has celebrations, go with it!!!! A WOE does not have cheat days it is simply part of a way of living.

Totally agree with you, Wholefoodnut. Nine months and no desire to deviate, that's a successful WOE.

If someone's plan includes what they call a "cheat" day, and it works for them, who are we to put a negative spin on it?

Wait -- If I understand WFN, what she's saying is that it's not about "cheating" -- that you deal with life as it comes. I may be very undisciplined at heart, but I just don't find that it's possible to live for the rest of my life without some of the most delicious things life has to offer. I love ice cream. To me, there is just nothing more delicious than coffee ice cream with hot fudge sauce. But I can't eat it unless I make it myself lactose free, AND, I know that my day-to-day eating plan can't include the sugar festival of a hot fudge sundae. But fidelity with my plan doesn't mean I can't ever have ice cream again. If that approach doesn't work for other people -- that's OK. 70 pounds down and it's working fine for me.

Perhaps take another look at what Sarge wrote - he is adding a few carbs and 100 calories - to me that is "carb cycling" which can be a tool for manipulating the metabolism when stuck.

What is a WOE?? I don't critize or make comments that belittle someone's choose of diet or how they do something. I posted what I do and what works for me. I did research for many months on the type of diet I can do being diabetic with cancer and this is what I found works. I have to be careful especially with having only 1 kidney. So please do not critize my plan and how I do it. Instead be supportive and understanding what works for one person doesn't always work for the other...Thank you.

And THANK YOU for everything you have done for us. We can all only wish you the very best; it seems you sure are due a whole lot of good luck.

Exactly HCB, it is a way to manipulate the metabolism. It shows the body that at anytime I can add extra calories & carbs or take in less. I'm showing my body & metabolism I'm the boss and I am in control....

So it's really not a cheat day but an integrated part of your overall eating plan, what works for you is what's right for you and I apologize if you thought I was criticizing or belittling.

I thank you Philmck...Yes it's part of my as you all call it WOE plan. I was told by my doctor the diet had to be tweaked because of having only 1 kidney. So I did some research and saw that to much protein for a kidney is bad. But to much carbs for a diabetic is bad so I had to decide which was the greater risk. So I decided I'd try to control my diabetes with low carb diet. However, I had to give my kidney a break as well so once a week I do what I call a "Cheat Day"...I'm not overly cheating as one would think. I'm just adding extra carbs and calories to lessen the strain on my kidney and also to manipulate my metabolism into thinking I quit my diet. I am greatful for all and any suggestions/support. Sometimes we have to take into others medical conditions as well as their diet plans...Happy WOE!!!

I'm closing in on my goal weight and will have to change my way of eating so that I don't lose too much. There are several strategies to accomplish that goal, one of which is to do like what you're doing and have a day each week or each month, depending on how sensitive a person is to carbs, where you do a reset like that. It's a learning process, but definitely not a cheat because you plan it and it fits into your overall plan. You're doing great, you'll reach your goals in no time!
