I made a batch of homemade hummus. If you have never made it yourself you should give it a try.

I added a sweet potato just because it was in the fridge and needed to be used in something. It was a nice addition to the chickpeas.

Hummus recipes are very forgiving and you can modify in many ways. When I first started making hummus about 10 years ago it didn’t have olive oil and small amount of tahini. In my journey to better health I realized those are actually healthy fats!! So calories take a backseat. You can find recipes on line or just add ingredients and spices slowly and adjust to taste. This one also had some roasted garlic cloves not in the picture. I have also used things like navy beans, pumpkin, squash to make hummus. Other items are sometimes sun dried tomatoes and chopped olives. Because it’s really all the other ingredients that give it the flavor profile not the chickpeas. But I doubt cauliflower would work…but it might. Lol

I make my own hummus too... I definitely prefer my own over store bought, but I have never thought of adding squash of any kind. coolness, honee!

Unity store bought hummus has a very dense consistency. When you add things like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash to the chickpeas the density becomes much lighter and has more of a “whipped” consistency and the calorie count goes down. I have made a canned pumpkin hummus with no beans just some olive oil, tahini and all the spices and that was delicious. Butternut squash is so watery it might just liquify when pit in a food processor but some added to chickpeas I think would work.

I love making homemade hummus! I’ve even gone as far as grinding my own sesame seeds!

Tesla I could see myself grinding sesame seeds. Lol. I incorporate beans/legumes into one meal a day and that is from dried beans. Canned chickpeas are my go to for hummus because it is fast and easy with not much foresight.

It's one of 2 foods I cannot eat. Chickpeas are not my thing...I think it's more a texture thing. Wish I did like it as they are nutritious.💜

Diana I also have sensory aversions to some foods. For me it’s eggs!

I make my own hummus but never thought of adding sweet potatoes to it. Thanks for sharing that! I often have some leftover sweet potato in the fridge.

What spices. I love hummus and want to make this. Can you give measurements perhaps? Very intriguing post.

I’ve never added sweet potato. Great idea!

Wifey. 1 can drained chickpeas, 1 large sweet potato, 3 roasted garlic cloves,4 tbsp olive oil, about 1/4 cup lemon juice, 4 tbsp tahini. Spices about 2 tbsp cumin, about 1 tbsp red pepper flakes, and black pepper. I don’t measure the spices but just taste until it gets to the right flavor. A jar of tahini is usually around $8.00 or so but as someone else mentioned you could grind sesame seeds and make your own because that is what tahini is. If you don’t use a sweet potato use 1 more can drained chick peas. I usually adjust the consistency by either adding water, liquid from the chick peas, more lemon juice or more olive oil. The cumin and tahini are what drive the flavor so more/less of those is where you adjust to get to the flavor you like. Lots of recipes online with measurements is a good place to start. Enjoy!

Not 2 tbsp cumin it was about 1 tbsp.

Interesting. We've never added sweet potato to ours. Hubby and kiddo LOVE it, me? Not at all. But they make it every so often.
