jwgibster's Journal, 21 April 2008

I have realized that I can eat within my points target and still make horrible choices for food. For example if I save up all my points until dinner I probably could barely squeeze in a really unhealthy meal at McDonalds. So, now that I am aware of that tendancy I am trying to fix the problem. One thing that has helped is to force myself to snack during the day and to be more aware of my fat intake. My goal is to stay under 60 grams of fat a day. I just arbitrarily chose that number because it felt reasonable as a starting point.

Oh, my friend! Please don't do that unless you have salad and 0 point fruits all day and take a multivitamin. Remember, our eating habits now will effect our readiness for when the genetic stuff starts to bite: Alzheimers, dimensia, clinical and chronic depression, loss of libido, osteoporosis, even cancer. Remember the recent handout about habits? Ask yourself why you are engaging in the bad behavior and create a plan to substitute the behavior with something good that satifies whatever it is that is motivating it. Hey, I love burgers, too, but I got cured after reading Fast Food Nation. The movie isn't bad either. It's actually well-done and entertaining. Avril Levine is in it. If nothing else it helped me get back on my diet, if only because it reveals how unwholesome mass producing food really is.

I really appreciate your concern. However, I think I wasn't clear. I wasn't saying that I was actually saving up my points to go to McDonald's, I was merely using that as an example of how I "could" theoretically work the system in that way if I wasn't careful. After I saw the movie "Super Size Me" I have really made every effort to eat more healthily even if it be at a fast food joint. My wife and I's current restaurant of choice is Subway, where we can get lots of healthy choices with no guilt.
