wintersmith's Journal, 01 March 2010

Ah, Monday, you arrive too fast. I hope everyone out there had a good weekend that was at least a little bit fun. Mine was hectic, but these things can't be helped. At least we managed to accomplish things that had been put off for too long around the house.

So last week was fun. I revamped my weekly goals to match the reality of what I was doing. I move my goals for time spent exercising from 2.5 hours to 5 hours and I upped my calorie goals (according the polar heart rate monitor) from 2000 to 3000. It was a little close to what I'm actually doing, and I hate to set low goals that are too easily attainable.

Granted, after I set these goals I spent 7 hours exercising and burned 4900 kcals (700 kcals/hour on average). This doesn't include a martial arts class that I failed to record. Of those workouts, the kickboxing workouts are the most extreme (930 to 1000 kcals/hour) while weight lifting is lowest (400 to 500 kcals/hour). Information that is good to know for planning my workout week.

The problem I'm facing now is that one days when I don't go and exercise, I feel lazy and otherwise a bit dysfunctional. Purely psychological, but it is one common symptom of overtraining. Between that and a minor elbow strain (hurts to bend my right elbow too far) I am overdoing it but not by too much. So that being the case, I think I'll be cutting the kickboxing back to two sessions per week. That will handily make it easier on my joints and get my exercise back to a level I consider rational for myself.

Still, it appears to be working. I get a narcissistic kick out of people not recognizing me that haven't seen me in a year or more. I figure its hubris, but these days it is my only vice, and if a man doesn't have at least one vice he needs to find one, fast. :)

You know I feel the same way when I don't exercise.

Balance is one of the most difficult things to achieve, but it is also one of the most important. Overdoing anything is not good, whether it's eating, drinking, training or (fill in the blank). Balance is also a worthy goal to strive for. I hope you find yours.
