When the pineapple workers harvest the fields in Hawaii, they wear leather gauntlets to their shoulders, because the leaves are live sawblades. They use machetes to slash off the crowns with about an inch of the pineapple attached, and drop it in the field, then slash the fruit and toss it in the wagon. Step, step, slash, slash, toss. The another worker follows behind and plants the crowns. The topless pineapples go to the cannery. When I was there in the early 70's, the workers went on strike and Dole told the locals to take what they wanted from the fields. We filled up our car trunk with overripe huge pineapples and had a big canning session. Pineapple marmalade and pancake syrup. I've never had a pineapple since to compare to those.

We brought pineapples back from Hawaii and I planted the top of one and grew a big pineapple plant, but it never produced any fruit. I loved the way it looked though.

CrystalJo, I grew it in a great big pot and it got about three feet tall, and quite hazardous, but it was sitting outside in a corner, not where anyone generally walked. It faced south-west and survived several years before a cold spell finally got to it. Very easy to grow, I'm no gardener.
