Ok, so I bought some chocolate chip and blueberry muffins for cheat day. My plan was to have a half of each. The chocolate chip was delicious. The blueberry? Not so much. As a matter of fact I only took one bite of the blueberry. I knew right away that they did not use real blueberries because I could taste the chemicals. How gross! And yesterday I bought my first soda in a month but only took two sips of it. I tried a different flavor but still could only handle about two sips. Why? Because they tasted like chemicals. When I started this diet I knew I would become sensitive to the taste of sugar but I had no idea how sensitive I would become to "artificial". I mean I thought I was doing pretty good at staying away from artificial before, but now there is no denying that I was sadly mistaken. I mean, I know that it is good that I can no longer over look the taste of chemicals because it will help me stay away from them but at the same time I miss being able to enjoy some of the foods I used to eat. Am I going to become one of those annoying picky eaters? A whole food nut? It seems that way now. Not that it is a bad thing except if it starts getting in the way of being social. Though I'm not very social to begin with so it probably won't fact in much that way either.

On another, and more personal, note. I'm starting to worry that I maybe losing too quickly. I am four days away from being on this diet for a month and I've lost 10 lbs (cheat days don't seem to be factoring in at this point). Here comes the TMI: Last night I spotted between periods. I NEVER spot between periods. Not once in the 20+ years I've been mensing; until last night. So I did like anyone would do and I consulted Dr. Google. Out of the possible causes that I found the one that seemed most likely was "extreme weight loss", which I found was defined as more than 2 lbs a week. When I took my average it came out to about 2.6 lbs a week. It doesn't seem like an "extreme" loss to me, but maybe it is. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm probably over reacting, I have a tendency of doing that when it comes to my cycle. But it has got me wondering if maybe I should try to slow down.

Ok Blurose411...here is my take on it..and I have dieted all my life, been anorexic, bulimic...etc....unless you are ill..you are not losing too fast..you cannot get that weight off fast enough...do not worry..you will hit a plateau.and struggle like the rest of us.....not sure what your weight is.....2.6 a week might be a fast loss for me at 121..but I would be thrilled to getting it off..again..have you been checked out by a doc? I want to get back down to like 112...and stay there...bad BP issues...weight loss helps

Being a whole food nut is not a bad thing lol. (wholefoodnut rocks!) And yes that is exactly what happens, you are retraining your body to recognize when it is not getting real food. Would you rather be annoying or overweight and unhealthy? I don't think I am annoying, am I(hush NM)? As far as spotting between periods, there could be a million reasons, hormones, age. If you are really that freaked out by that I would call your OB and mention it. They can reassure you. Dr Google doesn't know everything about your situation. If you weighed 120 2 pounds a weight is extreme. 10 pounds in a month isn't extreme at all, my doctor felt it was a very good goal. I believe you and I are sort of similiar for size. Deep breaths. You are doing all the right things.

Thank you guys, having calmer heads prevail quells the fears. I thought I was probably reading too much into it and you guys seem to be agreeing. But to answer some of your questions. I am now 185, started at 195, at 4'11" my goal is 125. No I have not seen a md and will not be able to see one for a while yet. When I do get to see one a hormone panel will be one of the first things I request. I have suspected for a while that I may already be entering perimenopause and would like to find out for sure. Though at 36 I'm still a bit young for it; it isn't outside the realm of normal possibility. And spotting between periods can also be a sign of that. I'm really hoping the insurance thing will change soon. My hubby is trying to get him a car and when he does I will be able to go back to work. Insurance for me is top of the list when one of us gets back to work. Then I can get this stuff checked out and know for sure.

It's the not knowing that drives one crazy.

The not knowing drives all of us crazy. Stress can also cause the spotting in between periods. It can also cause your period to pop up early or late. Yeast infection can cause the spotting as well. There are other things that can cause it as well. Weight-loss you have had is not extreme. It's fine.

Yes, Maely, I saw all of those things as well as pregnancy issues and birth control. But none of those are very likely. I haven't been overly stressed, if anything I'm actually calmer than before my diet. I have no other signs of a possible infection, nor any reason to suspect an STD. I've had my tubes tied; so while pregnancy isn't completely out of question it is highly unlikely. That also means there is no birth control causing it. Uterine fibrosis also came up as a possibility, but there again I don't have any other symptoms of those. So that left extreme weight loss and perimenopause. After thinking it over a bit more and reading everyone else's responses I think the perimenopause actually seems the most likely, but won't know for sure till I can get to an md. I can be a little bit of a hypochondriac if I'm not careful. So I'm probably reading more into this than I should.

Laughing Blurose as you are following me!! Chemicals, yup in the trash but quick!! I love food, love to cook, all kinds of real food with lots of flavor, not the artificial chemical doctored stuff. Losing too quick, depends on you I think, no expert. Nichol is dead on about the spotting etc. could be many reasons, go get checked as soon as you can.

On a side note: You may want to reconsider planning a "Cheat Day" while on Atkins. The cheat day could throw you out of kitosis. It typically takes a day or two to get back into ketosis. That beong said, you seem to be doing just fine ;)

A cheat day on Atkins? Don't think so. Perhaps one of your goals could be breaking the habit of working toward cheat days.

Carol and Lambie, thanks for the advice but cheat days are an important part of my long term goals. Whether or not Atkins approves of them doesn't really matter to me. My goals don't include being on Atkins for the rest of my life. My goals include eating a more healthy diet. Atkins is the tool I'm using right now to learn more about that healthy diet and how my body responds to it. The way I see it is that life will always have "cheat" days (think holidays or any other time you don't watch too closely to what you eat) and learning how to deal with them and bounce back from them makes long term sense. Not only that but cheat days have been shown to help with weight loss for some people. So far I seem to be one of those people. I am doing what I feel is going to work best for me and so far it has been working just fine. I learned 15 years ago when I went on a diabetic diet during pregnancy that trying to deny myself too much for too long leads me to binge. However, satisfying those cravings and urges in a planed and moderate way allows me to stay on the straight and narrow most of the time. But thanks again for your advice and concern. Wholefoodnut, thanks for the support. Happy journey everyone!

I just wanted to make sure you knew about the ketosis thing. Certainly do whatever works for you ;) That is the only way to make things work long term :D

I don't know if it happens to many others but I'm with you on the chemical/overly sweet taste of processed items I used to enjoy. I just can't eat them anymore. Not a bad thing though! :)

Three weeks ago, I lost what I thought was a lot, and fast (6-7 lbs in about a week). Like you, I spotted and wondered if it was due to the weight loss. The difference is, I am 20 years older than you and haven't had a cycle in maybe 5-6 years, so I was alarmed. My doctor found a 2cm polyp but was unable to remove it in the office, so I will have an outpatient procedure. Your situation could be a myriad of things, as someone stated. Perhaps you are correct in suspecting it's perimenopause, and simply coincidental with your weight loss. I understand it's difficult to seek medical care without insurance; perhaps there is a nearby women's free clinic? At the very least, be cautious and keep track if it occurs again, how heavy, and does it coincide with intimacy; this information will be helpful to your doctor. Very best wishes to you.

Thank you Peacfulmom. There is a women's center close by but unfortunately they are only set up for annuals and pregnancy test. Thanks for the advice on what to keep up with. I did write it down on my calendar because I am a little obsessive about my cycle. The hubby and I are really hopeful that I will have to go without insurance for only a few more months and getting the lady parts more checked out more closely is top of the list for when that day comes. Best wishes to you as well and happy journey.
