Anyone have ideas for on-the-go snacks? I have two troubles with these:

1. I am hypoglycemic and must keep food in my system throughout the day because an attack can make me pass out very quickly. I keep glucose tablets on hand for emergencies but don't like to have to use them. I can go from feeling a tiny bit hungry to full on sweats, difficulty speaking and moving, and tunnel vision/hearing in a matter of minutes and an attack can cause me to need an hour of recovery. It's imperative that I avoid them.

2. I am told I have a hyperactive stomach...it's just what my doctor concluded after not being able to figure out why it grumbles and hurts constantly. We did all kinds of tests and couldn't find a cause. Because of this, handfuls of almonds or an apple don't help...I'm having pains 15 minutes later.

These two things combined can be scary because I can't always tell the difference between hyper-tummy and hunger-emergency. My best defense is high protein in the morning and keeping food in my purse to combat it. Lately I've been over-dosing on protein bars (the kind with only 2 grams of sugar though). I don't think this is always the wisest option. If you have any suggestions of what I can carry in my purse that will help with this I'd be grateful! It wasn't hard when I wasn't counting calories but it's become difficult not to go over my caloric limit and make healthy choices.

I've been hypoglycemic most of my life (same thing, never could leave house without some food in my purse). I feel that I am doing much better on protein snacks than on high carb. I also accidentally came across connection between magnesium defficiency and hypoglicemia. I did an intensive course of magnesium oil applications in winter (magnesium is not well absorbed orally) and feel practically like a new person. Try to google it, may be it can help you improve your condition as well. It is relatively cheap though somewhat messy as you have to apply it topically.

I'm interested in hearing more about the Magnesium. Will look into it too! As for snacks, are there any non-refrigerated protein sources (other than bars) that you can carry? It's a tough go, I'm sure!

Interesting thought on Magnesium. I was told to take epson salt baths for low Magnesium when I suffered through my migraine episode a week back. As suggested above magnesium is better aborbed through the skin. This was recommended by a registered massage therapist. I tried it but couldn't swear it helped. Epson salts are also pretty cheap. I was told to use 4 cups per bath. Seems like a lot but if it helps.... For "purse friendly" protein, being a guy not sure this would work but, you could carry jerky. The dried beef, turkey sticks and the waxed type cheese that doesn't require refridgeration just might do the trick.

I have migraines too...maybe it wouldn't hurt to try the epson salt bath. Jerky is actually a great idea....I haven't had any in years. Thanks!!
