Learned my thyroid is off ... way off!
Taking meds, which I am not happy about.... I have read up on the Thyroid medication and it is a medication I may need to take for life!! WTH?
No recommendation for exercise and limit sugar from doctor who prescribed... so... I am going to limit my sugar intake, and exercise more (I had a shoulder injury in November, and have been unable to exercise until recently)... The OK winds are stupid, so unable to ride bike, and just now getting back to golfing. I am able to do some light weight lifting. Crossing fingers and praying this will work... it takes 21 days to see progress... THEN I will begin the thyroid medication. (MY CHOICE)

Were you diagnosed with Hashimoto's, by any chance? It's a very common cause of hypothyroidism in women. The thyroid issues are the result of the immune system getting confused and attacking the thyroid, so unfortunately after the damage is done, there's no way to repair the thyroid gland. That's why medication is often lifelong. There are ways to mitigate the symptoms, but no way to cure it, and unfortunately the medication is usually necessary - it replaces the thyroid hormones that the gland can no longer produce. I hope that you find a system that works for you, but I would also strongly encourage you to take the medications you were prescribed, as well!

No, the dr said an underactive thyroid and that's why I am gaining weight and feeling sluggish... wrote prescription (no blood work!!). So, my thoughts started processing after the appointment, and I realized no questions asked about my "very stupid/ignorant" sweet tooth, and my situation over past 4 months of little .. actually NO exercise, due to my shoulder injury adhesive capulitis (amazing how much your body reacts to slight movement of shoulder!!!... PAIN!) I spoke with nurse this afternoon, she will have dr call me. I will find out if he wants me to come in for blood work. If not, I will get a 2nd opinion. Thanks for your insight!! :)

Oh wow... It's common but not common enough to diagnose without bloodwork 😬😬 Good call!

I agree she_loves, take the meds, but also blood work is a must first. I have had hypothyroid for 20 years, it came out of nowhere, no family history but it is for life usually. Good luck!

Having a plan is key, and you've got one.

Medical professional here... I don’t understand how could your doctor prescribe thyroid meds without labs? I would definitely get a second opinion. But if you have hypothyroidism, it is going to be really really difficult to lose weight without treating your condition first.

I don’t know how old you are. I recently went to the doctor with the same complaints of weight gain, sluggishness, poor sleep. All labs done and it isn’t my thyroid, it’s basically a lack of estrogen. My point being, diagnosis without labs is very suspect. How do they even know where to begin with your meds? Time for a second opinion!

I have severe Hashimotos disease. I've found that processed food is not a good thing when you have a low thyroid. Eat as much natural foods as you can. Fish, seaweed, brazil nuts, greek yogurt, and whole eggs are good. Foods high in Selenium and zinc are good for thyroid. Foods like soy, and gluten can effect thyroid in a negative way. Cruciferous vegetables are up for debate. My endocrinologist who is into natural healing, says they are not good raw but cooked are ok. You need to know what level your TSH, T3 and T4 are to get a proper diagnosis and to know proper dosage of thyroid meds. Having thyroid issues is a lifelong condition but I've lost 50 lbs so it is possible.💜

Oh wow. But I say, do whatever you can do. We are here for and with you.

I would skip the second opinion and switch primary care doctors. Just find another doctor and have them transfer over your medical records.

Omgoodness! Definitely blood work! Fixing the thyroid will definitely make you feel better IF that's the issue. For me it's a combination of my thyroid and being peri menopausal. Great combo right there. Recently though, for me, it was an extremely low vitamin D. that combined with the other two things makes for one extremely tired individual. I hope they can get it figured out for you. But I don't know that I would take medication without having the blood work first. If your thyroid is okay then the extra medicine may end up messing you up. Feel better!!

Podgermom, being low in Vitiamin D and Vitiamin B is quite common with hypothyroidism. Need to have those periodically checked. 💜
