Rob.c.weiss's Journal, 24 February 2012

Wow... so it occurred to me today that for every 6 lb of fat you lose, you are losing about 1 Gallon of fat. Holy crap, what a visual. Set out one gallon of water for every 6 lb you lose, and you can get a real idea of the volume of fat you've lost.

I think we lose sight of how much work goes into losing weight. And I'm hoping this visual helps give me some feeling of accomplishment. A 30 pound weight loss isn't just 30 pounds -- it's 5 GALLONS!!! If someone you know has lost 100 lbs, that's close to 17 gallons of fat. And of course, keep in mind, that if they lost 100 lbs, but added muscle (which is heavier), they probably lost even more than that.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone else, too.

(BTW, I calculated 5.7 lb, but I based this on water density at 8lb/gal compared to fat (at 70% the density of water), but I'm not sure if that density is right for human fat -- so this is just a rough estimate. But, I know it is close. Which is also why I'm just rounding it to 6 pounds)

Wow - that's grounding... I've been at it for about a month - I only need to lose 15 lbs, and have lost 6-7. Well, that's a gallon! Holy crap!!
