~Weigh in Tomorrow~A Spectrum of Long Term Goals~

So, tomorrow is "weigh in" day for me, or what I'm starting to refer to as "data collection" day, or even "Hey, let's see how much water I retained and muscle I've gained" day. We'll see what happens...

I note many on here have some timelines to coincide with their weight loss goals (i.e., I want to lose this much around this time). I'm mindful of setting any strict date for my weight loss goals as there are too many factors that can impact that measurement. And, though I know for some a deadline can provide incentive, for me it can provide a potential opportunity to feel like a failure if I don't make the deadline. But, that doesn't mean I've thrown out a goal date altogether!

One of my passions in life is birding. Actually, it goes something like --> Eagle Enthusiast --> Raptor Lover ---> Birder (loves all Avians). If that seems weird to some, well I don't know what to tell ya. I grew up in one of the most environmentally conscientious places in the U-S-of A, the county I lived in literally made their coastline a marine sanctuary, I started out a zoology major, and the University I graduated from in the undergrad years is one of the top six in the country when it comes to environmental sciences.

Soooo...bottom line is, if ya don't get birding and a genuine love of the natural world, chances are you never will. Birders are okay with this...if everyone loved birding, all the birds would be scared away! LOL

So, what does the natural world have to do with 'dieting'?

Well, if anyone has ever studied the natural sciences, what you come to understand is there is indeed a season for everything and everything in Mother Nature falls into a spectrum. Us humans may have a date for the first day of spring, but that doesn't mean snow won't fall on that day. So, when it came time to consider what kind of date I wanted to set for a weight loss goal, I decided to make a spectrum of dates. If I lose 2 lbs per week (which, I don't feel is realistic for me), but ya never know - my deadline falls in late July. If I lose 1.5 lbs per week, it falls somewhere in November, which is doable but still, life can happen when we're making other plans. At 1 lb per week, I can hit my goal somewhere around the beginning of January.

And who knows, I may not hit my goal within any of these dates or it may be sooner than I think. The point is, by creating a spectrum of dates, I take away some of the pressure and anxiety of trying to make one all encompassing deadline that may not be realistic for me. The spectrum of goals become more like markers in the journey, rather than a finish line I have to crush myself to cross. And, just like mother nature, it provides both flexibility and structure, especially in a world where truthfully, no one can predict the future.

Again, I know this approach does not necessarily work for everyone, and that's okay. But, for the time being it works for me.

This is a journey - and a personal one at that. Not everything works for everyone. I am often amazed at the myriad of "diets" on this site. Everyone is different and the reason I love this site is the wealth of knowledge from personal experience. You can pick and choose from different methods, try different things, and if it doesn't work for you, you discard it and move on. I agree with the date range premise you are working from - it helps to not set hard and fast dates until you know what your body will do. My friend at work can lose 5-6 pounds a week on her weight watchers program while I can typically only do 1 - 1-1/2 pounds a week. I celebrate everyone I lose - the fact that I am slower than she is just points to our different ages, body types, and metabolisms. Good luck on your journey!
