Joy in the "little" things!

I was reading a blog this morning on one of my keto sites and it struck a chord in me. It was in 2KrazyKetos blog and it was dated 2021, titled "The Glad Game". The gist of it was the role that optimism plays in our thoughts and how as humans we tend to dwell on the negatives, we search them out in ourselves and in others and never fail to find them. I'm copying and pasting an excerpt from Rachels' post because I find that so many of us dwell on our mistakes, or self-imposed failures in this journey and don't celebrate the small changes we are making in our lives with the joy and optimism that they deserve.

"There will be times when you’re tired of explaining the keto life and feeling “different.” There will be weeks when the scale doesn’t move, (or worse, moves up). There may even be moments when you think to yourself, “I wish I could just go back to not thinking about what goes in my mouth. Life use to be so much easier when I didn’t care.”

Those thoughts may seem harmless, but they can easily take root and become a strangling weed to your progress. It’s best to immediately take those thoughts captive and look for the good. For example, yes you’re different in the way you eat. But, you can be glad you’re also experiencing a very different level of good health than those following a Standard American Diet. Yes, your numbers on the scale may not be where you want them to be. But, you can be glad they aren’t what they use to be. Yes, it may have been easy to make quick food decisions when you didn’t care about what you were eating. But, you can be glad that now you do prioritize your health and well-being. Determining to like and care for yourself is a major victory!"

This is aimed at keto practitioners, but it applies to every single WOE on the planet. Celebrate the little victories find joy in every positive change you make. Don't wait till you reach those future goals to pat yourself on the back, your life is here, now, today and we all need to learn to play the Glad Game!

Hear, hear! That is great advice. I don't follow the keto plan, but this is applicable as you say to every facet of our lives. I have myself been focusing on living in the present and enjoying the moments rather than constantly striving to try and control tomorrow. As if it can actually be done! Anyway, excellent advice and I for one am trying. Thanks for posting that. :)

I don't do keto but can't tell you how many times I have defended my WOE.Not as much as a couple of years ago but every once in awhile it happens. It's discouraging as I lost 60+ lbs and kept it off for over 4 years. My motto s do what works for you. You are doing great and I appreciate your support of what I do! 💜💜

Not just for weight loss or health but for any part of life where you’ve made progress. It’s so important to look back on where you were vs where you are now and celebrate the progress 🥳

@Windy Day, being in the present moment and not using the NOW you are in to plan and worry about tomorrow is an extremely difficult task, it takes as much effort to redirect my attention to the present moment as it does to make proper food choices, little by little I am improving and sometimes....when I'm sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee watching the day come alive with the sunrise, I note with pleased surprise that I am not staring at the horizon listing all the things I need to get done in my head, but I am admiring the beauty of the rising sun, the peaceful sound of the wind in the pines and morning birdsong. Appreciating the beauty of a newborn day instead of wishing it away by focusing on tomorrow. Those moments are becoming more frequent, I am optimistic that it will continue to evolve into a state as natural as breathing for me. For now, I am full of gratitude for the moments that I am in the moment.

That's awesome, Debra. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, or just finally realizing how short our time on earth really is, but Im finding more and more pleasure in what each moment offers than ever before. Simple pleasures, being present in the now and less distracted by 'what-ifs', 'need-tos', worries and lists. This modern world operates at too fast speeds for me any more.

Thanks so much for sharing that post from 2KrazyKetos. [I need to be following them more often!] This was just what I was needing to hear today. I am also enjoying the comments on the feed so far. One practice I employ (when I remember to) is to love everything. It's a way to switch off negative thoughts by just shifting your attention and requires no effort. Grinding on negative thoughts really shuts you down, and I find that "appreciating" involves thinking but "loving" is just a state of being or state of mind and definitely in "now" time.

I'm glad you guy's "get it" we are all on different paths, but those paths lead to the same destination, we have more in common than not. We all hit stumbling blocks and we are all aware that there is not a magic pill or a one size fits all solution. But day to day, we celebrate each others victories, the large and the small. When we stumble and fall, we have hands reaching out to help brush off the dust and help us back to our feet. It's a given that diet and exercise is important, but it's not the only thing that can set us back and derail us. Mental and emotional health drives our bodies just as surely as diet and exercise do. I like to think that FS members provide just as much mental and emotional support as they do diet and fitness advice. That's a big part of what I get out of it and I thank you all for being there and sharing your little victories and helping me celebrate mine!

Making changes, tweaking nutrients, actually feeling better and better as I slowly repair my nutrition deficits, I had no idea that changing places between my fat intake (now lower) and my protein intake (much higher) and adding more fiber (50% more) would make my knee and hip pain reduce. The pain reduction correlates with a 3 inch reduction in my abdomen size which indicates to me that it's not so much a hip problem as it is a lower back issue or simply the addition of much higher protein is mending the muscle attachments to my joints....it's only been a week at the higher protein, median fats and low carb macros. I just changed places with my protein and fats, Hubby commented on my abdomen reduction, he noted that I no longer look pregnant 👀👀👀!! Thanks Mister!! I smacked him, then thanked him and we both fell out laughing! 🤣🤣🤣🥰 That man, even after all these years he never fails to make me laugh. That's a good thing!

That's great news, Deb! I'm trying to get in 150-200g of protein, eating fat for flavor and mostly staying around 50-100 carbs a day (haven't really been tracking exact numbers, except protein). I know I'm over calories some days & under others. It turns out that is an actual "thing" (calorie cycling). I've just been eating when actually hungry, learning to listen to my body more & more. My most hungry days are after a good leg/glute day, and rightfully so...lol. I'm definitely not staying in ketosis, but dipping in and out. I still skip breakfast most of the time, but haven't been skipping lunch as much as before. I don't have carbs early in the day. I try to keep them for after workouts and/or dinner (99% of them come from natural sources). That allows me time in ketosis, keeping my metabolism flexible. The hubby's can really be a mess! 😂
