Divided By Zero's Journal, 01 July 2009

While I'm house-sitting I don't have access to any real signs of civilization to keep me occupied. That leads to a lot of randomness. Some of which I get to share now...

Everclear's "So Much for the Afterglow" is quite possibly the most perfect album ever made. Sort of. I say sort of because the whole "best EVAR" argument is subjective. But of all the albums I've owned I have the deepest connection to this one. It is now about a dozen years old, and I still listen to it fairly often.

Bestest songs from the CD:

Father of Mine
Ever feel like you were just meant to listen to a song, or like a song was almost made for you. That's what I felt like the first time I heard this one.

Everything to Everyone
I love that the poppy nature of this song doesn't match the lyrical content at all. A lot of Everclear songs are like that. My favorite lyric from this song is "I think you are blind to the fact that the hand you hold is the hand that holds you down."

I was also going to post "Amphetamine", but that one drops a couple of f-bombs. Feel free to look that one up on your own. It's a great song and faster paced than the other ones. Random lyric from it...
"She's perfect in that f***ed up way
That all the magazines seem to want to glorify these days
She looks like a teenage anthem
And she looks like she should have been happy in another life"

I love "Father of Mine." You can feel the raw rage and determination. First time I heard it, I cried. My son has a father like the one in the song, and I know he is going to be the best dad EVER. Anyone can deposit sperm, but only very special men can be daddies. One day, you're going to be one of those lucky guys. Daddy's rule!

I was shocked when I first heard the song (I was about 12). It just wasn't something people talked about. The best way I can describe it is that listening to that song was like therapy for me.

I'm glad that you discovered that song, and that it helped you. It's amazing what we endure as kids, and more amazing that we can come out on the other side as whole, functioning adults (at least most of the time)! Have a great day /0.
