Breast Cancer: Since my Mon died of breast cancer I am always on the alert for news articles on that subject. I got a little bit out of my comfort zone trying to explain to someone (on Doing Atkins Right Group) why CLA in butter is a good thing. My response is quoted below, but if anyone can give a clearer explanation I'd appreciate your help.

"Yes, CLA is one of the good fats. Unfortunately it is misunderstood because of its trans bond, which technically classifies it as a "trans fat". But it is not the same as the dangerous man made partially hydrogenated trans fat. Recent studies show CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) may be beneficial for the prevention of breast cancer."

Thanks much.

I'm not sure of any of the science of these things, but I choose natural products over chemically created products any day. If our grand parents did not eat it or put it on their skin then we shouldn't. My mother sadly also died of cancer, I think a combination of smoking and stress more than her diet though. I personally think the "fat free" marketing of products has caused a huge problem of people eating chemically modified products in this fear of eating fat. Personally I would rather revert to eating pure animal and vegetable oils than consider eating reduced fat products pumped with chemical sugars and modified ingredients. But that is just my opinion :)

Triaby - sorry about your Mom. Mine smoked too - guess it was a big part of that generation.

I think your answer was just fine...and true! How sad that we have been conditioned to eat the things that are manufactured by man rather than by nature! So sorry to hear about your mom and your's triaby....my mom is post surgery, post radiation, and taking medication. She is doing really well. I am determined to change my food, my weight, and my exercise and live a healthier life.

I also smoked and I quit 3 years ago. CLA is also found in coconut oil I believe.

Congratulations on quitting smoking. There are at least two others on here that just quit smoking and are trying to lose weight. Wishing them much success.

Thanks Buffy and ctlss. I quit smoking 10 years ago and am so glad I had the willpower to do it, it really is not easy and I don't envy any smoker trying. Here's to a healthier future for us all :)

I am about 1.5 yrs cig free, gained 10 lbs, found FS and here I am! and Triaby, I agree with you, much rather eat the natural foods rather than the man-made chemically engineered crap that is the ruin of the body on a daily basis!
