Ninety-nine degrees today but it didn't hit the 100 mark the weatherman predicted, which would have made it the hottest day so far. Hard to stay hydrated.

Third day of the first week of the second month of my three month whole body dumbbell program. These sets are actually easier to follow/perform than the first month. I'm thinking about going every other day on dumbbells rather than three times a week and adding a session just devoted to strengthening my legs, which is where I want to see improvement. On the other hand, I want to avoid overdoing it, which a weakness of mine. I think it's time to add three more pounds to the 18 I've been lifting with the sumo squats. After doing two sets of 12 reps with 18, I'm switching to 20 in hopes of making more progress. One nice thing about the 15-pound hex was that it was possible to dip lower.

Today was the first day of doing Harvard Medical's gentle core exercises instead of Pilates. It's a less strenuous program which might be a good thing because I had to back off some of the Pilates exercises because I was popping something. Because it was easier, I did it in one 50 minute session including stretches. Most of the exercises were easier but some were harder, including the planks. Rather than fool around with getting a baseline, I decided to go ahead and start the program and do the baseline later. The gentle core isn't designed to be the basis of an exercise program but a supplement. "Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life" is the program I'm substituting for Pilates. That book should arrive Thursday. I'm back on the every-other-day diet. Right now, if I was going to spend serious money, I would lean towards seeing a physical therapist rather than paying for Pilates classes but the book may have everything I need.
