erikahollister's Journal, 29 August 2021

I had a little lesson in carb sensitivity yesterday. I went to Boston for an overnight, to babysit for my granddaughter. I was pretty good on carbs, but substituted whole milk in my coffee for my usual heavy whipping cream and then ate some rice crackers for lunch. It added up to over 50 grams of carbs, instead of my target of 25. Just a little sloppy. I weighed in up by 1.8 lbs this morning due to glycogen recharge/water retention. I know it's not fat gain, but it's also certainly not fat loss. I'm going to fast today, to regain my fat-burning status (ketosis) and get back on track. Travelling is tricky. Loving people put lovely food in front of you, and you feel like a jerk if you say, 'but I can't eat this!".

I'm having a hard time accepting that 0.1 lb of carbs can cause a 1.8 lb weight gain.

Don’t be too hard on yourself Erica! You’re doing great! Just keep going!😇

@Era166 When you are doing keto, you dump a lot of water weight when you eliminate carbs. Your muscles just don't retain it, as usual. So, when you eat carbs, the glycogen goes back into your muscle tissue and you soak up water weight like a sponge. It's just water, but it's a sign that you're back into sugar burning and out of fat burning ketosis. @Mecceba I'm not being hard on myself, I'm just staying on track.

Good luck with your fast! BTW - 25g of carbs over 24 hours is unlikely to knock you out of ketosis. I can eat 100g at times, and still produce ketones when fat adapted. Also, each gram of glycogen bonds with 3-4g of water for muscle uptake. So worst case +25g of carbs = +100g on the scale. About 3 oz.

Hey Jimmie, I'm just reporting what happened. I'm measuring ketones (went from .8 before to .3 after 50g carbs, and after fasting back up to l.4) 100 g of carbs would knock me out for days. People have a lot of variability in carb tolerance.

@erika Agreed. My main point is that muscle glycogen uptake for +25g carbs is only a few ounces.

In theory. I know what happens in my body every time I eat carbs. I gain water weight fast and it takes awhile to recoup.
