Interesting thought... I have to lose weight just to be fat!

Apparently next week I'll just be fat instead of super fat. All this according to the 'glorious and amazingly accurate' BMI scale. Anyway, if I lose 2 more pounds then I'm out of the "Obese" category and into the "Overweight" category.

Or maybe it happened last week... because I don't really know what my exact height is. It's either 5'9" or 5'10" depending on who does the measuring. So, if I'm really 5'10", I was officially un-obese a week ago.

This probably sounds jack-assey and elitist, but I've never thought the BMI scale applied to me. When I first started learning about nutrition I was playing football in high school (which is weird for someone as nerdy as me). At the time I was an offensive lineman and I weighed about 250 pounds, which made me the lightest starting lineman by far (most were 315 and up). At 250, my BMI was way into the obesity range. But my body fat percentage was low enough that my abs were just starting to show. Now, I don't have anywhere near that amount of muscle mass anymore because I didn't feel like continuing to work out 4-5 hours a day, but it made me realize that the BMI is nothing more than a wild guess.

Oh wow. You're not as tall as I thought you were. I figured you were like 6ft or taller for some reason. /shrug. I agree about the BMI thing. I don't even trust my body fat percentage on my scale. It says I'm at 29.1% which is only about 2-3% lower than it was 20lbs ago... Doesn't make sense to me. I'd only trust the percentage if a pro actually poked and prodded and pinched at me to figure it out, haha.

Now I have a complex about being short! LOL I don't really have an accurate means of measuring body fat, so I just rely on pictures to see how I'm doing.

Lol. I'm not saying you're short! You just look taller in your pics! Haha. Yeah. Pics and how your clothes are fitting are better than BMIs and scales. Oh, and most importanly how you feel. ;)

I don't think BMI applies to me either. I am going for more of a size goal than a weight goal any more. I agree with going by how your clothes fit. I think BMI doesn't work for people who put on muscle more easily. My body fat percentage went down 17% when I only lost 5 lbs when I first started on FS, just in the first 3 months. I had it tested at the gym. When I went back for my 3-month follow-up they said I didn't have to lose any more weight because according to my BFP I was in the "fit" category, but according to BMI I had to still lose 4 lbs to get out of the "overweight" category for my height.

I haven't run the calculation yet but I believe my ultimate goal of 185 would still put me into the overweight category for BMI. It's weird... I wear a large shirt. Not an extra large, not an XXL. My waist size is 32-33. The ideal waist size for a guy is below 34. And yet... the BMI still calls me a fat-***.

((super edit)) I just remembered. I made some sweets this week that would crush the willpower of almost any dieter. LOL I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but I'm basically my family's designated baker/dessert slinger. I can't cook a steak, but if you need a cake, I got that handled. I ended up making monkey bread and a new monstrosity that I can only call... Frankencookie. Anyway, I managed to do all that baking without eating, or even testing any of it. I kind of feel like Beethoven (how's that for delusions of grandeur). Even though I can't taste it (or hear it in his case), I just have to believe it's awesome.

BMI ... I'm glad to see someone else talk about the BMI calculation. I'm 5'10" (I think) and my goal is 175 which I'm not even sure is realistic for me but I'm willing to give it a whirl. The BMI calculator says I'll still be "overweight" at 175 ... the last time I remember being 175 I felt downright skinny!!! I MUST weigh 173 to be considered "normal." ... I think my body will tell me when I've arrived at a decent maintenance weight ... if only I will pay attention!!! Here's to BMI ... Bad Measurement Information!!!

You're exactly the same size as my boyfriend... and I don't consider him fat. Soft, maybe. Lol. I'm willing to be you're more muscular. Stupid BMI! And HA! Those sweets are on my side... prepare to be defeated! Bwahahahaha...

Ha. You mention BMI and someone else posts a link to a site that measures it... But this site also has a body fat percentage calculator based on measurements. Don't know how accurate it is, but thought I'd pass it along. With my measurements, it says I have about 22% body fat... I like that number but I'm not sure it's right. http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html
