BadAndee's Journal, 18 April 2008

Well, the review is out! Two solid weeks of Atkins Induction phase is officially over! I've promised to be fair and honest about my experience with the diet, so I thought I'd share my overall thoughts.

The biggest eye opener here is how easily you can become addicted to carbs. My main diet consisted of about 1100-1200 calories a day, before Atkins, and I think that when I did a pie chart of what I was eating, a very high percentage of it was carbohydrates.
I read someone's journal the other day in which they commented about how most diets share a common thread of lowering the amount of carbs (I think it was Kimbulie??), and I couldn't agree more, having tried several of the more popular diets out there.
One thing is for certain though; None of those diets proved I was addicted to carbs, like this one has! None of them changed that inner feeling of dissatisfaction with my diet, and NONE of them made me feel better overall, including my level of energy...like this diet!

So there it is! I LOVE the way I feel right now. I wish I could describe it to those of you considering going on the Atkins. I'm not feeling like I'm on a diet, I'm not suffering bouts of hypoglycemia anymore, and I'm not counting every single calorie, which was becoming a very tedious task indeed!

So, there's a chart in the Atkins book that will give you an idea of how much weight you can expect to lose during the induction phase, depending on how overweight you are. If you have less than 20 pounds to lose, it tells you that you can expect to lose 4 pounds. So, did I lose 4 pounds? Actually, I lost 4.5 pounds!

I'm very close to my goal weight, with only a couple pounds to go, but I'm not likely to change this diet too much in the near future, because it's making me feel so much better! Carbs were poisoning me, as was sugar, and I had no idea what their effects was having on me! Actually, to quote Dr. Atkins, "Sugar is a metabolic poison". I believe that now.

I really love gettingt into my gym and running those high miles, but I still have not jumped into my schedule like it was before I got very sick a couple of weeks ago. I'm eager to see if I can sustain enough energy to run like I was, without carbs...so the jury is still out on that one!

Now that I've completed this portion, I'd like to hand out the grade. I'd say out of 5 stars, I'd give this diet a 5!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Wow...what a testimonial! So glad this worked so well for you! For those of us on South Beach which is also low carb, what is the difference with Atkins that made the difference for you?

Oh, I bought the book yesterday, where is the chart that shows your expected weight loss? I've lost 5 lbs and today is day 5, incredible! I know it will slow down a lot but I'll feel a lot better in my clothes from this induction jumpstart!

Kimbulie, it's on page 166 of my version; Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. BTW, it sounds like you have a low metabolic resistance, which means you could lose as much as 12 pounds during your induction phase! Holy Moly!

mbhpro, the difference is the detoxing of carbs and sugar completely during the induction phase. Once I was clear and devoid of these in my blood stream, I suddenly could smell things that didn't usually have a strong odor, like bread for instance! smells like a doughnut or cake!

Im so glad you found what works for you! It makes me want to try it too, but Im so afraid of changing right now. It sure is nice to know that you have had such success with it. I was told before that Atkins works but only if you do NOT cheat, it said that if you cheat it can set you back as much as 6 weeks (whatever that means). I tried it for a short while but didn't have the book and cheated. Im sure there is NO diet in this world that will work if you cheat on it LOL. Glad it is working so great for you and that you are looking sooo fine!

Well, Well - if it is not Miss HotAndee gracing the pages of FS! I am happy to hear you are feeling better and have discovered the source of your troubles. I feel the same way about SB as you do about Atkins - I LOVE it and it doesn't feel like a diet or that I am being deprived. I feel like I have to tell people at work that really I am not starving myself - I am eating all day long - at regular intervals. I think I have discovered that eating small amounts of food throughout the day is the best thing for me. I followed Phase I of SB 100% and never cheated - and it has been nearly six months now and I still don't crave sugar or carbs at all. I will occassionally allow myself to have a whole grain rollup or my daily splurge of 1/4 C. Whole Grain Granola in my yogurt and I feel that it is such a treat! I used to drink moderate amounts of diet coke and haven't touched it for six months either - don't even miss it. I think so much of what the regular person eats is filled with empty calories and lacks any nutrition - I say why bother! Thanks for checking up on me my friend - I miss all my FS buddies. I get a two week break from school at the end of June - can't wait! Then watch out....I'll be here every day harassing everyone again!

Hi Badandee!! What a great job!! As a low carber (and calorie counter) myself I'm just wondering, how did you stop counting calories?!?! And how many do you think you're eating now? I can't stop counting cals, and I'm not sure how many I should have. I'm still afraid to go above 1000-1200. Even while I'm only getting 20-30 gr carbs. :)

I can't add anything to that, you've said it perfectly!! I'm so happy and excited for you that I want to start over doing 14 days by the book!!! It's so weird that I've done this for so many years that sometimes.. you can "get lazy on the job".. You have reminded me of those happier times and I intend on getting back to that. Sugar really is addictive and I can remember in the beginning.. how wonder I felt when I finally broke free of the addiction. Whoo Hoo!!! I can't wait to do this again.. After 14 days from now.. I'll head on to OWL. Keep the journals coming... you motivate me so much!!

I TOTALLY agree with you! Atkins hass been good to me---while I haven't dropped the weight as dramaticaly as some, my A1c, a diabetic indicator, has dropped to nondiabetic levels! meaning my diabetes is in control! Now if I can figure out away to keep the insulin from interfering with the weight loss.....
