BadAndee's Journal, 10 April 2008

Thanks everyone for wishing me back to health! I'm not better yet but I'm well on my way! Bronchitis, and strep at the same time as the induction flu...Wow baby!!

Ok, now for the update on my dire-diet-woes! LOL

I promised I'd let you all know (by using me as the human experiment), what it's like to switch to the Atkins diet after a lifetime of vegetarian. Are you ready for this? Now, I'm not going to include ALL the stuff I've experienced (reddened cheeks over here!) but I'll be happy to report on most of the important stuff!
I think I left off voicing my opinion on here, on day 3 of the "Induction Flu", which is what they call this first week of (H.E. Double hockey sticks…Amen!). I'll attest to that by saying...haven't you noticed that I've been missing?? I've been too sick to wiggle around! During this stage, my body is basically switching to a whole different metabolic process in which it now dissolves FAT, (At least we hope so!) instead of the usual burning of high levels of carbohydrates. Before, carbs were happily trotting around inside me, until they were broken down to some very useful glucose (AKA SUGAR!!!) for me to burn as energy!!!

That's why I'm here. I'm going to report on my experience as honestly and candidly as I can. I'm hoping that it will enlighten some of you, inspire some of you, and entertain the rest of you! LOL (I think that means I need to interject a few of my comedy routines along the way....)

Day 3 was UGLY. Since I was pretty under-the-weather, I had to force myself to drink so that I didn't lose too much water. Very important, right? (I love how we can all agree!!) But, good news! I didn't have to force myself to eat!

At this time, they say it’s advisable to test your urine for ketosis, as a way to ensure your body is definitely in a state of ketosis. Feeling the way I did, I was happy to dip my stick in the urine! If it could prove all this transitional discomfort was worth it! LOL SO, I tested my urine for ketosis and found that the keto-stik reported a moderate level of ketones...more good news! My body was now burning fat!! So, I did a happy dance for about 2.2 seconds (no more energy left in me!). I stepped on the scale, but no change in weight. I wasn't too worried, since this process can be quite shocking to the body. Breakfast and lunch were uneventful...but at dinner time, I made some grilled trout (but I hated it! No wonder it was on sale at the store!) Instead, I ate about oz of cream cheese and 1/2 cup of cottage cheese instead! Yum yum! Hey, I learned that you could sprinkle a teeny tiny amount of artificial sugar on the cream cheese and it tastes like cheese cake! Of course, take caution on that advice...I WAS sick and my taste buds might have been numb! LOL

Day 4 was similar, but I was feeling better…maybe...well, I was a little!
Day 5 I woke up feeling pretty human again, so I thought, what the heck! Let’s step on the scale and see if there’s any change in my weight. There was none. Still, I’m not worried. This is probably a super shock for my body, lots of changes to deal with, illness on top of that, etc. I shrugged it off! Later that evening, the oddest thing happened to me! I tested my urine and guess what??! No ketones! NONE! I retested...same results! Odd how I could be producing them 2 days prior and not at all now! Of course I got really frustrated and kicked the scale! (It only hurt me a little but you should see the scale!) Dr. Atkins says when this happens; I am probably just one of those people who are metabolically resistant to this kind of change. Now keep in mind, he meant for me to conclude this AFTER the 2 weeks of induction, not on day 5. But still…no ketones??

Yesterday was Day 6 of this diet. I’m still not back to work (Doctor’s orders!) but I’m keeping active by walking around the Mall and shopping for that darn dress I still haven’t found for the dance on Friday! Good thing I have my daughter’s shoulder to lean on! I can leave that ugly walker at home! (Just kiddng!) LOL

Now, I’m still processing my notes from yesterday, so I will do my homework and pick up where I left off very soon!

Ps…no animals were hurt in the filming of this documentary AND the sick Bad Andee was able to rest between sentences! My hugs to you all! I most definitely MISS YOU!

lol Sorry to hear about your being sick and these new diet woes! Do continue with the needed fluids and I cannot wait to hear what happens within the next week or so!! How exciting for you to embark on a new diet. On the trout... ewwww!! lol Don't get me wrong, I LOVE fresh Rainbow trout, but key word is fresh... if I didn't catch it "today", then I am certainly not eating it, nor could I ever bring myself to buy one from the store. =S I was raised near Mt Hood, and we did lots of lake and river fishing, and I got to try lots of fresh trout, YUMMY! Good luck finding other things that are new and exciting to you! I highly recommend that you find a local fish market that may be a bit more in price, but may be a whole lot fresher and tastier. :) Feel better and keep us posted on the new diet front!! ~bully :D

LOL so sorry you have been so sick. I hope you are much better by that party on Friday. I don't know if I would have stuck to Atkins if it was that hard for me. I guess it will get better soon. Just do what you think is right for you and get well real soon.
