8hunter6's Journal, 12 July 2016

ok... was gonna try that fasting thing...but i dont really know what kind of fasting... I've done the 16:8 before and it didn't seem to make much difference... so I was gonna try a whole day.... until I was done at little gym and middle child was hungry so we went to jimmy John's next door...... they have an UNWICH! I found a place I can grab a quick meal! sweet deal! no bread but instead lettuce.... so that was the high light of my day.... down .6 ... getting back to 203...

I hear things about exercise. .. like you retain water to repair muscle. that cycling or elliptical doesn't build muscle.. that working out doesn't help weightloss...

yes I have recently been struggling to lose but! my pants are loser... I can breath easier.... my heart isn't pounding out of my chest getting upstairs...my back is weak but the rest of me feels stronger.... and I can see the shape of my stomach is changing... I can see where muscle is under the fat... my mom flap is raising up, I can see my c section scar now. but only since I started exercise.

I don't see how cycling doesn't build any muscle. I'm using the largest muscle group to push my fat ass around. they feel stronger, my balance is getting better. how is that wrong?

no I'm not body building or lifting super heavy weights.... I'm trying to strengthen the little tiny muscles that people forget... the ones along my spine.... I do things for my hips too... I'm not dead lifting, but I'm getting stronger...

how can having more muscle make me gain weight later on? that doesn't make sense to me. doesn't muscle burn more energy?

am I wrong?

and it seems as though some may be less than patient with a few posts. well this is my journal. this is where I work through things....

in anycase.... I know weightloss starts with food... but I'd like a fit body at the end of it... I don't wanna be a floppy, lanky mess that resembles a blob fish

You've done a great job, don't let anyone influence what you're doing. You're smart and can sort the wheat from the chafe, not saying to shut or shout anyone down, but after all the opinions, etc., it's still your diet, your path, your goal, listen to biofeedback and go from there. You're more than capable of seeking advice if you feel you need it, and there's a whole buffet of different diet advocates here to choose from.

Resistant weight training will help you build muscle and making sure you have enough protein in your diet as you're losing will help you maintain as much muscle as possible (you will lose some as you will lose, fat and water with each pound that goes). Exercise IS GOOD for our bodies, it just doesn't help a great deal with weight loss as your body will up your hunger demand to make up for the energy expenditure. Our body is a "use it or lose it" proposition. Keeping it moving, stretching, lifting and supple can only do us good in the long run!

You are correct on all counts...I LOVE Unwich...been eating those from time to time for a couple years!

I don't see how anyone could say cycling doesn't build muscle. Have a look at the legs of bicycle racers! I remember my cousin commenting on how big the muscles above her knees had become after she returned from a many months-long bicycle tour of Europe. (It diminished when her life resumed ordinary proportions.) Read and explore but figure out what works for you. I just recently decided to get over trying to do it all perfectly and quit worrying about not doing it perfectly enough (in someone else's book). If you are making progress, what you are doing is working!

Never heard of an unwich! I wasn't really exercising but went in the pool yesterday and as usual, it made me super hungry and cranky. Isn't exercise supposed to make you feel better? I think its my age, my body is lazy : ) But we are losing so there!

Just giving general info - When they say certain exercises do not build muscle or help lose weight - it is mostly in reference to steady state cardio. Long periods of steady state cardio will have your body breaking down muscle to burn as energy instead of burning fat. Joggers may be skinny but are not usually muscular or ripped/toned. Google pictures of marathon runners vs. sprinters. Marathon runners are smaller compared to the typical leg size and strength of a sprinter. Building muscle when you are not losing fat will make you gain weight. Exercise alone without a proper diet will not get most people to their goals. You can diet to lose weight without exercise. Exercise without a proper diet will only provide limited results if any at all. Most people also automatically assume you are bulking up like body building when you say you are lifting weights.

thank you for the support... it's been a few little comments from people here and there... not many... but it gets stuck in my head.... like when I used to bike a lot my legs were killer! it's just I feel self conscious sometimes cause I can only use 10 pound weights or it hurts my back too much. 5 pound would probably be safer for me in all reality..... just sucks.. you always wanna think you can heal from anything. no one wants to really admit they have a disability. I know I dont. I just can't believe losing 50 pounds make it hurt more... and sleeping hurts cause my ribs aren't cushioned and my butt hurts...it feels like my bones are coming through the skin... lol husband even got me a butt cushion for me to bring to the middle kids hockey ... the bleachers were brutal.... so I'm hoping biking will help make a butt lol!!!

Jorge you make some good points there. lol maybe I should specify that they are little baby weights lol!

I've read/heard most of what JorgeLoco says and it makes sense to me. And if you can tell you are getting stronger, then the exercise you are doing is working -- and combined with your weight loss, you will be generally healthier overall, and that is the true objective, I think. I, too, am limited in the type and amount of exercise I can do, but if I can walk further without breathing hard, and it's easier to move the bales of hay, then I am accomplishing what I need to, regardless of what anyone else says about my exercise plan! You are doing great, don't give up!! (Although I'm not sure biking will help your butt, you may just have to get a more-padded seat!! lol)

Lol I try to use my butt muscles biking but ya I gotta find other stuff. I do some squats... can do a bridge or butt lifts, whatever you call it... I'm still looking stuff up

What about the old mantra "muscle weighs more than fat." And "muscle burns more calories." You remind me of the Chinese Plate Spinners I watched on YouTube. It certainly doesn't look easy, yet it is admirably accomplished.

Listen to your body FIRST, then glean what makes sense to you from the comments and suggestions. Try something out, and if it works, keep it. Oh, and look into isometric exercise. It's doing wonders for my back!

My suggestion for you is to ease into fasting and see how your body reacts, what the best time period for a fast is for you and as you begin to fast more regularly you may wish to extend your fasts. Sometimes we chronic dieters want to start super intensive to "jump start" things and we either burn out or fail so we go back to the comfort foods or routines. Here are a couple principles I've gleaned from Brad Pilon (Author of 'Eat Stop Eat') and Dr. Jason Fung (search youtube for his videos they're outstanding). 1). A 24 hour fast can begin and end at any time in the day that is comfortable for you. For me it's anywhere from 11 Am - 1 pm start and finish. I have 500 calories + - for breakfast, begin my fast and then on the second day eat 1500 calories + - so the total across the two days equals a resting body maintenance level. 2). Brad also encourages you to think about "What can I not live without eating for the rest of my life?" Those are the items that end up tripping us up if we ban them. Love chocolate - build it into your meal planning occasionally but eat less of something else on those days. 3). Look up your resting body metabolism based on your height. Here's a LINK: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calrmr.htm mine is 1884, so I eat between 1850-2000 calories a day average on 5 days, fast 2 days. It's good to actually change up how much you eat across those 5 days but keep the total around 5 x 1884 (for me). GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY THE LEARNING PROCESS!

Hunter, You know what Phil and I do. Im not going to preach. You know what works. Are you strong enough to do it? Or are you going to keep with the self torture? Simple question and not implying anything here. Cycling is of course the best low impact exercise your cardiovascular and lower body strength training. Glad you chose that. But seriously, if your trying to lose fat, stop working out. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself. Stop training for 2 weeks. Do nothing but Diet. Eat like me. 1 meal a day well below maint calories. Call it a personal challenge from ME! Or don't. Im proud of you lady.

Just weighing in here a bit on the exercise discussion (pun intended). Both resistance training and cardio training have great quality of life and health benefits besides the obvious benefit of burning a few calories. Some people love resistance training and hate cardio and some people love cardio and hate resistance training. I am in the middle, I know that without cardio I would not be as fit, healthy, muscular and lean as I am now. I also know that without some resistance training I would lose strength in my upper body and back...and fit muscles in my opinion do look better than soft squishy muscles. My final thoughts are anything is better than nothing and do what you like to do, as that is probably what you will stick to in the end. Oh ya, cardio can help build strong muscles both for endurance and power....as resistance training can also benefit your cardio health if used properly.

Unwich? Yes please. Italian Night Club is my favorite. You're onto it without us. Humans are funny. We say we want to help, then we get in your way. We try not to recommend, instruct, or preach, but we do anyway. Go get it girl. Pick a path, give it time, expect to succeed.

Ok knuckles. ... gimme the details of what you do
12 Jul 16 by member: 8hunter6
You wont like it. And it isn't going to be easy. Eat one meal a day. That's it. No exercise either unless you REALLY like working out. Its totally un-needed. I don't care WHAT you eat. Just eat BELOW your maintenance calories. Tip though. Eat high fat to keep hunger down. That's it. That's all you need to do. No magic pill. Self control is key. And YOU, I KNOW have it in loads. Like I said though. Studies have proven that eating a single meal a day can increase lifespan by as much as 35%. How is that for incentive. Ohhh, and I practice the WOE I just gave. Without fail.
