Welp. I have come to the conclusion that the reason I'm not seeing the dramatic drops for myself that I'm seeing for others on the Beast Challenge is that I have been holding on to my evening cocktail with a death grip. I assumed that since rum has 0 carbs, that it wouldn't affect my macros, throw me out of ketosis, or slow fat loss. Turns out, the first 2 are correct, the third is not. It turns out that the body will burn the alcohol first, and then get back to burning fat. *Sigh* How many freaking ways can I self-sabotage, especially when I don't have all the data? So, starting with the new Beast 2.0, I will be alcohol free. Why don't I start today? Because just as I had to mentally psych myself up to start this LCHF lifestyle, knowing it would be for life, I have to do the same to let go of a 20+ year nightly ritual of a rum and coke (or 2) to "unwind". I'm not saying I'll never drink alcohol again, but if I want to make the changes in my body, I have to break the daily ritual. Save it for special occasions. Bonus: My tolerance will go down, so I'll be a cheap date! LOL

Perhaps let go of the rum & coke on a regular basis, but find a new routine to "unwind." Perhaps just a break where you sit down and have a cup of tea?

Yea, letting go of the alcohol sucks. The good news is that once you are FULLY adapted is that you can have it on occasion, and move right back into ketosis once it's burned off. Glad to know you will be a cheap meet date! LMAO!

Trying to wing it is never a good idea, problem is, "where to start??!!" I always recommend to folks just starting low-carb get a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. It's not THE guide to LCHF, but it's a good primer and it talks about avoiding alcohol (and why), among other pitfalls. Got to do the reading, then you have a knowledge base to work from and make appropriate tweaks.

Thanks Phil, but I'm far from winging it. I first read the Atkins book back in the 70's (and did the diet). I also have the updated version. Like C2B, I'm a research hound, and right now the learning curve is the multifaceted intricacies of metabolism. Ya know, some things you just don't think through, or avoid looking at altogether, because you just don't want to make the change? Cognitive dissonance sucks. LOL But the answer is unavoidable in this case, and my desire for a new body now outweighs my desire to keep my comfort rituals alive. The changes I see in spite of it are spurring the desire. Thanks for your input!

Thanks Trackin. I have a pitcher of iced tea in the fridge. That will be my go-to beverage.

Thanks for the clarification, my comment probably came across as condescending, not my intent, and my apologies!

@C2B, I think I'm pretty much fully adapted already. Even 2 cocktails don't throw me out of ketosis, but since I have them before I go to bed, all the fat burning I would do overnight is supplanted by burning alcohol instead. DOH! It probably is keeping my liver on the fatty side too, so dropping the evening ritual will help there. I might do the magnesium cleanse you suggested after Beast 2.0 ends.

@Phil, not to worry! I have a thick skin, and didn't take it as condescending. We don't always know where people are in regards to their journey and their knowledge, and even for experienced people, reminders are always good. No apologies necessary, my friend.

Thank you, Mks, I try not to alienate most people (notice I gave myself some wiggle room right there lol), I re-read NDR about every three to six months and have both Diet Revolution and NDR on my desk for quick reference. I seriously need to read the current Atkins book, but haven't made it a priority since it wasn't written by Dr. Atkins himself.

The alcohol isn't great but I imagine the cola is worse.

Hi buddy, what about having the nightly drink before 8pm? According to knuckles, the meal should be between 4-8pm... Are you drinking it around 10pm? Maybe the time of consumption might help?

Interesting thought, Smarty. I usually eat mid afternoon. I might play with the timing thing after the challenge. It will do me good to do without drinking alcohol for a couple of weeks. I was shocked to discover that I can't remember the last time I had an alcohol-free day! I don't drink to excess, and rarely get drunk, but it's a daily thing for as long as I remember. Time to break that pattern!

Great plan - you will see results!

I'm going through the same thing right now with coffee. Can you water it down? Or use sorry coke in it?

You're probably right, BD..but, hey..we have to pick our battles. LOL

Grrr. Diet* coke? Then you psychologically have that drink but are doing less damage? A wean off plan?

HAHAAHAHA! I had to laugh at the autocorrect..."sorry Coke".
My dedication to the changes I've made in food have shown me that I have the strength to lose the alcohol as well. If I *need* a drink, then I'm an alcoholic. And I'm not going there. We'll see if it turns out that I am.
