How I lost 4 pounds in one day (again)
Let’s go over what happened:
1) Woke up with a weight of 182 and a glucose reading of 78
2) Wanted a treat, and Dr. Fung says I can have coffee with whole milk so I got a latte (not sure if Dr. Fung would approve of this choice but I did a glucose reading 2 hours later and I only went up to 84)
3) I then went for a 1 ½ hour 7 mile run
4) When I got back I took a glucose reading and I was down to 68!
5) I got on the scale and I was down to 178! (4 pounds lost and the day was not over yet!)
6) I then drank a liter of water (1 liter of water = 2.2 pounds) got back on the scale and I was back up to 180 pounds)
Anyway, I am finally getting off the CICO (Calories In Calories Out) bandwagon. I still believe in the law of thermodynamics, but I can’t just calculate the calories I take in, the calories I burn, and then expect the scale (which is measuring the fat and water in my body), to line up.
Lets’ look at my day again…
1) Wake up with a body that is filled with fat and water. But, here is the point, I also have an insulin producing pancreas and a glucose producing liver. These are actually major players in the drama that is about to unfold…
2) I have a latte. I didn’t need it because my body already converted fat into needed glucose using gluconeogenesis (https://bit.ly/2LhMxPZ) (remember I am fasting so my body is not getting it the normal way). This is where the pancreas releases insulin that triggers the liver to produce glucose (now I could be in ketosis and my body would be using a slightly different process, but according to this article I would need more days for that to happen: https://bit.ly/2H2WBLA).
3) I then drag my fat ass full of fat and water and glucose out for a run (I have a 84 reading at this point after the latte).
4) My body burns through the glucose (my glucose reading is down to 68) and with it the water. “Each gram of glycogen is associated with 3-4 grams of water” (See: Losing Water Weight: How Carbs Really Work: https://bit.ly/2nkvUez).
5) This is why I get back and I have lost 4 pounds! Here is where I have to stop and see that if I weighed 182 before the run, and my run only burned 1500 calories, and a pound of fat is about 3500 calories, I should have only lost ½ a pound not 4 pounds. Of course I did not lose 4 pounds of FAT! I lost ½ a pound of FAT and 3 ½ pounds of WATER! Keep in mind my body is mostly composed of water so we can do these water fluctuations all day, but we also have to accept that my calories expended is NOT directly related to my weight.
6) I drank a bottle of water, that has NO CALORIES, and I still gained 2 pounds in 3 minutes. Again, I took in NO CALORIES and I GAINED weight.
Go ahead and flame me for this post. Everyone is welcome to believe what they want to believe. I am just explaining why after reading two of Dr. Fung’s books, I now believe my insulin is what causes me to be fat not my calories consumed. This is why I fast, to control my insulin, not my calories.
And this is why I really need to stay away for lattes during a fast because they are not helping 😊
