I went to the gym for the first time last night! It was terrifying haha but I did it! The trainer was fairly useless...she just told me to do the 30 min express workout machines, demonstrated them a little and left me to fend for myself. I thought she’d write up an exercise schedule/plan for me to help me get where I want to be. No such luck. So I stayed and did 2 rounds of the 30 min express workout and used a few other machines. I’m sore today so it must have done some good. I hope to make it there 2-3 times a week to help tone and build some muscle. I’ll do my elliptical and ab workout at home a couple times a week and with any luck, get this old body in the best shape it’s ever been in 😁. Have a great day everyone!!

TRX is a system invented by a navy seal to keep himself and colleagues fit using their own bodyweight (when no gym available) to create many variations of resistance training. Lots of info on the internet and was a bit of a hot item a few years ago...very good for core stability, balance, strength and endurance training...I am lucky, currently living with a TRX/Pilates instructor....apparently good teaching is important. 😊

Thanks Steven!! I’ll look into that! Living with an instructor would definitely be a plus😁

I was a personal trainer myself and to hear something like that bothers me a little bit I hop that doesn’t keep you away from the gym and the weights. Because that extra stressor on the body does go a long way to help you reach your goals. There are also plenty of free workouts and plans online that you could use. The most important thing is that you find something that you enjoy doing that way you will stick with it and be consistent.

My first trip to the gym, fell over a weight and broke a toe - That healed went back and on one of those cable machines, the weight fell on my finger, broke it - After I went back - Just kidding - Don't be scared, there are people to help you, and ask questions - You will feel great - I am working out at work - No problems with exercise

Such a huge step! Way to stick it out and not get discouraged by the lack of training. Seems like you’re already in the right mindset. I had a similar experience my first day. Keep it up! 🙂

momma, I could see why you would be frustrated. A lot of good advice given here. I cannot add to the advice because years ago when my husband went to check out the gym and was specifically told, "do not sign us up for membership, only get a price". He came back with a couples membership! I went to the gym twice, that's it, twice in the pool for an entire 20 minutes! So, no advice here. I hope you are able to use and take full advantage of all that your gym has to offer. 😊

@momma6224, So proud you pushed through your fear of going to the gym, this was job 1 accomplished !!!!! Well done.... as for the trainer portion - this is very disappointing and that person should be reprimanded, if not terminated for a failed responsibility. Agreed as others have stated, a trainer is supposed to provide you proper instruction on the equipment, proper technique in biomechanics of your bodies form as to prevent potential for injury. Additionally, the trainer if worth their weight (no pun intended), should have inquired about your overall goals, if you had previous/current medical or minor injuries to include former surgeries of any kind (muscles torn/surgically severed muscles or tissues (i.e c-sections), broken bones, and nutritional information such as previous weight issues, dietary problems (eating disorders), and then after having gathered the above information began developing a workable, real world routine/nutritional plan, and tracked proper progress as to guide you to your end goal..... A trainers job does not end in a 15 to 30 minute period and unless this was an introductory session (which is offered as such at other gyms from time to time to see if you want to proceed)---in other words to see how serious a person is, and dare I say as some have here already to charge more as time goes on. If you have time, I'd like to discuss something with you (offline). Don't worry nothing negative, nothing involving finances (as often persons will do), not selling anything, but just a very pleasant discussion should you be up to it. If not, I still wish you well in your endeavors..... and obviously will be cheering for you - whatever you decide.

If your gym has TRX, I HIGHLY recommend it.
