Ideal Weight's Journal, 05 February 2017

Why is the end of the day so hard for me? Am I the only one? I did excellent all day. Even had supper out and stayed under my daily calories. Stopped at the store for a heavier kettlebell and bought a bag of miniature Reeses'. Ate about twenty, I'm pretty sure. I was super ashamed and threw the little foil wrappers in the garbage without counting them. I estimated twenty for my food journal, which put me over my calories by about 700. So not worth it..... So upset and frustrated with how much trouble I'm having staying on track.

It takes these kinds of incidents to help form us into a different mindset. A mindset that in the past made it ok to overeat for what ever reason. Think of it as a burn or a scrape and that hopefully with enough burns and scrapes over time, you'll remember the pain before you pick up a bag of candy next time? You'll make a lot of small steps like that and before you know it, those small steps have taken you miles from where you were yesterday. Take it one day at a time and when that becomes tough, take it an hour or even a minute at a time. Complete that minute before you move onto the next. A couple successful minutes or hours or even days will add up, I promise. You had a great span of 7 days counting calories and sticking close to your calorie limits; that's a huge success. Had you been able to do that in the past with any great success, you would be here right now; neither would I. If this was easy, everybody would be doing it and we wouldn't need sites or support groups like FS. Again, great job at journaling your foods, you're doing awesome!

this happens to me a lot too. Im good all day then BAM, I eat crap before bed or in bed. Sometimes I get thru it, some times I give in. For the most part, I try and be prepared with healthy alternatives and be sure Im eating enough through out the day. And when push comes to shove.. I try and moderate, so if im gonna eat cookies, just eat one.. The best advice I can share, is dont beat yourself up over it. Like Frosty says, thats why we have these sites for support. Let it out and the most important thing.. pick up where you left off.. dont let this be the reason you have 20 more .. One thing Ive learned is that is you want a specific food, its an external want and you dont need it.. if you will eat anything, then you are truly hungry so when I crave a cookie.. I know I dont really need it... sometimes this helps me.. Hang in there... your doing great.

What the other commentators, excellent advice. Pick it up, keep going, and you got this!

No one's perfect. Just brush it off and get back to doing what you know you should.

I hear ya! I do this also...but in the morning as I work an overnight shift in a large hospital. I have good intentions to not eat when I get home from work before going to bed, but if I need to stay awake for any amount of time doing chores or just catching up on e-mails I end up eating everything in sight!

This is why eating very little during the day works well for me. Regardless of how much I eat during the day I am going to want a lot that evening, so I just plan to get the majority of my calories between 4 and 7 pm (I go to bed pretty early, so adjust that based on your bedtime). That is something to consider.

Read my journal entry for today. I talked about this very issue. Do NOT let it derail you. It is one day. Look at this as a lifestyle change that needs to be sustainable. You can do it.

Thanks everyone. I REALLY appreciate the feedback and support. Sometimes just hearing I'm not alone is enough.... I learn about what works and doesn't every single day.

Hi all~ I'm a newbie here (like 20 minutes - maybe?) I figured I'd add a comment because I have this problem too. 8:00 pm it starts. So, I just heard a few days ago that it's a biochemical thing and it's something that actually is happening to us. The appetite DOES increase at around 8 pm and stays strong until (I forget exactly what they said here, but I think it was...) 11:30 pm. Heard it driving in my car listening to some talk radio channel I always listen to where they interview everyone about everything... like scientists, doctors, authors, professors, etc. So I do believe this to be a true statement. [WNYC-FM New York : 93.9 fm is probably what I heard it on]

I am the same way. I can do a great job all day and be very proud of myself only to blow it in the evening. And I don't know why. It's self sabatage

I mean sabotage.

@pauit1 - All of that is changeable, we can manipulate our biology and feeding times to get our bodies to change; it won't be easy or fast but it is possible. It takes lots of courage and persistence. The urge may still be there but it should be more muted. Our struggle is real. Most addictions you can put away though that tiger will growl from time to time. Our addiction to food is a tiger that we've actually got to let out of the cage a few times a day, feed it and hopefully get it back in before it realizes it's outs. Our struggle is real and it's what draws us close so that we can support one another.

This is totally anecdotal, but I find that when I forget to take my multivitamin this happens to me, yet on days I remember to take it I don't get those crazy, eat- everything-in-sight events. I've wondered if it isn't my body thinking it's starving because I'm deficient in some nutrient, cause when I make sure it's got the basics covered it doesn't trigger that response in me. Just a thought that taking a daily multivitamin may help for you.
