As we get older we do not get any younger. Seasons return, and today I am fifty-five, And this time last year I was fifty-four, And this time next year I shall be sixty-two.
(Henry Reed, "Chard Whitlow, Mr Eliot's Sunday Evening Postscript").
Parodies of major twentieth-century poets aside (and I won't be 62 this time next year either), today I am fifty-five. I'm also 116.8 pounds (52.98 kg, 8 st 4.8 lbs) lighter than I was a year ago. I have more than 31 pounds to go to get to my goal, and that still feels like a mountain to climb, but when I look behind me, I realise that I have come a long way up that mountain.
Yesterday, I put in 50 minutes at the gym. Today, my weight is at last below 14 stone, which is a nice birthday present for myself. I have a few pounds till the next benchmark (mean American weight for my age) I'm aiming to get below.
