Multiplicity1's Journal, 20 March 2010

Our 13 year old dog has cancer and has just started throwing up and avoiding her food for the first time. I'm worried this is the beginning of the end. This will be the first time I have ever dealt w/the loss of a long loved pet. I don't know how I will cope. She is one of the family - always happy to see us when we get home - always protective of my daughter and I - so playful even at her age. I want to be able to fix it and there is nothing I can do...Tonight I totally had way too few calories. I suppose I could eat a salad w/olive oil to bump up the count but I'm not hungry. I did go and walk for 30 minutes in the grocery store. People stared at me but I got my walk in. My husband couldn't walk outside because he has bad allergies. I haven't checked my ketones but as long as I am eating 20 carbs or less they stay dark purple. We are watching our local college girl's basketball team play in the NCAA basketball tournament. We are playing Oklahoma State and are ahead 29 to 10. It's hard to enjoy it though because I'm so worried about my dog.

There is no way to avoid the pain of losing a companion. We lost our boy of 15 years last September, and it drove me into a dark cave. I don't think our dog intended or approved of that so I had to accept the loss and grieve but also celebrate the 15 years of laughter and joy that we had with him. It is not an excuse to fall off of your choosen path or ignore your own health. Life does move forward but only if you celebrate your companion while you have them and after they leave us. Let the pain happen, it is much healthier.

As one who has had "fur babies" all my life and am the proud "parent" of two pups right now, I can so relate to the lose of our loved ones. The heartbreak is indescribable and so painful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for you! When I was growing up we used to the crazy 'cat family' (although we also had three dogs) and know how much we get attached to them. Please know though that your pup has been very lucky in having you and in having you still. I know it is no consolation at a time like this, but it does mean the world to them. All my thoughts are with you. Also, I am a FIRM beleiver that we will see ALL our loved ones again, especially those who gave us love in return so freely and abundantly.

First time I have made an online comment to anybody, however I have dealt with the aging of a beloved companion many times in my life. This may be one of the most difficult times you will ever face. It is a devastatingly painful experience for all. All I can say is you will know when the time is right. I suggest you do not hang on too long and that you do right by your pal and best friend -- she knows that she is loved.

Multi, I am so sorry to hear about your loved one. I too am a pet lover and would do anything for mine. Just as you would anyone else in your life, just being there and showing your love will help her in her final days. She knows you love her and she has shown her love back. If you ever need anything, I am here for you.

Take care....my thoughts and prayers are with you both!
