e-commerceunleashed's Journal, 28 January 2017

I decided to take a look back at my meals over the past month. I was surprised at the amount of carbs I was consuming even though I thought I was doing well. Carbs are sneaky little things! Most of my carb intake happens with either dinner or later when I get the munchies. Most of the time I am under 10g of carbs by dinner. But something as small as a starlight mint can send me over 20g! I've decided that while calories are a nice way to see how I am doing, it is really the amount of carbs that make the difference.

I correlated my diet to my weight loss and found that the days when I consumed lower amounts of carbs, the weight came off. On days where it was higher I either stayed level or gained a few ounces. Now more than ever I realize the low carb truly is the answer. I know for me it is even more critical that I closely monitor my carb intake and learn exactly what foods to avoid. It's the small things that sneak in a ruin an otherwise great daily diet!

I am no longer doing the "net carb" thing. I want my total carb intake less then 20g per day. It will be interesting to see how much of a change I see and how quickly. If you are struggling with losing, take a hard look at your carb intake. Make sure you know exactly where they are coming from so you can avoid my mistakes.

what is "net carb" thing?

Most carbs come with fiber. You subtract the fiber from the carbs to get net carbs. So if a food has 10g of carbs but 3g of fiber, then net carbs is 7.

Agreed on watching carbs. It has worked for my husband and me, both lowering our weight and helping our overall health. We started on doctor's advice - 3 different doctors. The 2 cardiologists even recommended snacking on pork rinds because, even though mostly fat, they have zero carbs. Good luck on your journey. May you have the success we have had.

Pork rinds are my favorite snack! I keep a huge tub at home and at work. Of course it helps when you live in the town that makes them!

Oh me too! Nice crunchy snack on there own. Sometimes, I crunch them up and dip shrimp in eggs then in the crushed pork rinds - it's like bacon wrapped shrimp with a nice crunch. I dip mine in Caesar dressing, hubby dips in Siracha mayo. Wonderful football food.

I've never read if net carbs are the same as just plain carbs? Maybe not... I'm just trying to get started with a LCHF diet. Do I need to consider all carbs, regardless of fiber?

It's a personal preference I think. I used to use net carbs, but no longer. I want to see the difference between both methods. If I am correct, I will lose much easier using just straight carbs.

Are you logging your meals? You can set what FS calculates. You can choose up to 6 items. I have mine set for calories, fat, carbs, net carbs, protein, & RDI. Also there's a pie chart at the bottom to tell you your percentages of fat, carbs, & protein. I try and keep my net carbs under 10 grams which puts my carbs under 20 grams. Also, I try and keep carbs at about 5% of my diet. Of, course I ate Halo Top today so I've blown my carb count but I only eat it once a week. :-)

@USNADad. Net carbs is carbs minus fiber. However E-Commerce is the 2nd person I've heard from in 2 days that thinks the Net carb theory may not be sound theory. I believe he's right that it should be the total carb count that's under 20 grams.

Maeday--What a great idea! I'm going to try it. I love shrimp. At an oriental market here in Phoenix, I get 'garlic vinegar' flavored. I have crushed them and used as a coating for baked chicken thighs. . . . E-com.. Thanks for your great posts. I look forward to them. Good luck with not counting the fiber. I know on FB --felician nurse keto -- says that's the way to do it.

Just love reading these posts! I'm still learning how many carbs I can have and still lose or maintain. I was using net carbs. And I forget about pork rinds! I think in the back of my mind I still thought of them as junk food. This is gonna be fun to add them to my grocery list! When I get the munchies, I can actually eat them and feel satisfied. And I love the idea of using them for breading! And dipping in CEASAR dressing, yum!

I LOVE pork rinds breading! Never tried it on shrimp, but it may be worth a try for my son.

If you have the opportunity to buy fresh made chicharrones from a Mexican grocery or restaurant I suggest you take advantage. Chicharrones con carne (with meat) will change the way you think about pork skins.

Ok, I googled Chicharrones con carne. Check out this video, they look good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jSWdPMDCFA

Phil ... my deal is the salt. Are the ones you speak of not as salty as the kind you buy in bags in the stores? I love these but the salt ... I have pitted edema in my ankles and at this moment ... my ankles are showing bones. Not when I eat pork rinds.

They're usually pretty salty, so that might be a no-go for you, Mom. Anecdote; I, too suffer from edema, it's co-morbid with the particular type of heart disease with which I'm afflicted. Since going low-carb/keto I have zero signs of edema. Back in 2013 I found myself in my doctors office with pulmonary edema and an echocardiogram revealed a blood clot in my heart. Low Carb gave me my health back. I've still got heart disease, an arrythmia that could cause me to "die suddenly", there's nothing diet can do to fix that, but other than that, I'm fit as a fiddle and healthier than I've ever been!

Wow. I didn't realize any this Phil. You really are making eating low carb the way to live. I haven't been eating keto, but I practice lower carbs and mostly no grains. It really does help with my edema, too. It's not gone all the way, but it's better than my old 'cankles'. LOL!

I don't recommend doing what I do, find what you're comfortable with and work out your own specific details, but I can tell you this, cutting carbs down to almost nothing and entirely eliminating sugars has taken away all of my inflammation and swelling. I couldn't even rotate my ankles a couple of years ago, I had an edema related condition called venous insufficiency that caused my legs to be fire-red, swollen, and constantly forming blisters that would pop and leave raw, open sores on my legs. After six months of low-carb that stopped entirely.

I have been keeping my net carbs 20 - 55 most days. That is why I say I am not in ketosis. Since I started keeping my calorie average to 1200, I probably added more carbs back .... because I could. I see what I have been doing. I am intermittent fasting every day in some form, too. I might be getting burned out from trying to do too many things. :) Phil, your way helped you to become the healthy man you are now. I am not opposed to trying something different if it will shake things up.
