I just started eating steel cut oats. Hmmmm. I don't like them as much as rolled. I ate them cold the other day... Weird. And today I warmed them in microwave but didn't read instructions. 5 freaking mins no thank u lol. Ugh. I'll eat them up before I buy anymore oats but probably not going w the steel cut anymore.

Well, guess what? I worked out today, and really worked out very hard, but I forgot to do my 22, so it is psych up time. 9:17, so I have some time. lol Misty, not that it is any of my d#mn business, but do you ever remember your mother without a cigarette in her mouth. I didn't know you could smoke 4 packs a day. Good luck, if you can stop!

Oh my mom stopped smoking when I was probably 5? So yeah, she was a very good role model. Both my parents were 😊 and still are.

The best way I've found to eat Steel Cut Oats is to cook them in the crock pot overnight so they are done in the morning when I wake up! I grease the crock pot and throw in 2 Cups steel cut oats, peeled and cut up apples diced, 2 tbls brown sugar, salt to tast, good teaspoon of Vanilla, cinnamon to taste, 2 Tablespoons Butter, 2 Cups of Milk, and 2 Cups of water. Cook on Low overnight. I add some maple syrup and Craisins in the morning to each individual serving as you like. Sooo good!!

Over night? I'd be scared it would catch fire or my electric bill would be sky high! Lol. Thanks for the tip, sounds good :-)

Misty,
cook your Steele cut oats for about 30mins, They should have a light earthy flavor. I love them. You can add fresh fruit to change or enhance the flavor.

30 mins for the stove to be running seems so long lol. Oh well trying it.

Slow cookers are made to run for hours at a time. Most have Low/Hi settings and a slow cooker run on hi for twice as long as an electric oven uses about the same amount of electricity. Also, 30 minutes for a stove top is not long at all. Non-Instant Brown Rice cooks for 35 minutes, minimum (and that does not include the time it takes to bring the the water to a boil).

Cheapest way to cook items like steel cut oats (which I love) is in a thermos. Just put in your grains and (usually) double that amount in boiling water and stopper it up. Do this the night before and you'll have cooked and at least warm cereal in the morning. Might need a slight warm up in the microwave. You'll want a thermos with a little wider opening, too.

The basic ratio for making steel-cut oatmeal is 1 cup of oats to 3 to 4 cups of water boil water, add oats, reduce heat, and simmer — but it does require some patience. The oats take a good 20 to 30 minutes to become tender and decide they want to make a porridge. Start tasting the oatmeal around the 20 minute mark and keep cooking until you're happy with it. Sometimes I find that the oats are tender at 20 minutes, but leaving the pot bubbling for a little longer helps thicken everything up.
