Daddy Manatee's Journal, 04 November 2022

Had an exciting afternoon yesterday. Had to try and pull a stillborn calf out of its mom. The cow was giving birth (it’s first calf) I think this cow was bred to a bill that throws large calves because another cow I bought in the same lot died. So she was struggling. After an hour and half I was able to get close to her (this is out in open pasture) I can see the calf is stillborn. Tried to help pull it out when she would push with no success. Finally had to grab some rope and tie loops around the hooves and pull with my four wheeler. Finally got calf out, huge thing for that poor little cow. Got the cow back up and when checking her before leaving she was eating. Hope she is ok today!

Will be at the gym late this morning. Had a call and needed to open a gate so a new keeper could come collect his hives this morning at 6:30.

Thanks Anne. I have been concerned over the young cow too. Yesterday when I fed she was back with the herd. She was moving well. She was even pushing a group of bill calves I call the ‘boy band calves’ away from the hay she was eating. I did not get a chance to see her today as I was away at a karate tournament for my daughter all day. I’ll get a good look again tomorrow and have a vet coming out to check her too.
