Hernias... talk to me? My lungs were doing well yesterday evening. So last night when I couldn't sleep early morning I hopped on the bike and biked for an hour. I also recently upped my resistance on the bike (since I'm not biking as much, hoping I can burn a little more calories with a stronger resistance). I was reading a book while biking, and I'll be the first to admit to not paying the proper attention to myself or anything else when I'm reading... but I think I may have given myself a hernia. It doesn't hurt all the time. It's a very specific spot on my middle abdomen (really close to my belly button, actually). It hurts most if I am laying down and press on it, or if I am laying down and try to use my abs to sit up. If I'm just walking around or sitting normally it doesn't really hurt at all.

My main question is, is this a doctor thing? Or is it just a chill out and take it easy til it goes away thing?

So... I did a little research on hernias. Not positive that's what I have. It's hard to know with the fat still on my tummy though. I can't simply look to see. However, it sounds like a hernia should hurt more when you are standing and less when laying down. Not the opposite. MaybeI pulled a very specific muscle somehow? That might make since hurting more when laying if the position is stretching the muscle out. I think I am just going to drop the bike resistance back down a couple notches (I raised itone notch, but will drop it 2) and take it easy for a few days.

i hope for you it is not a hernia

Me too, its what my husband called it. But after looking it up I don't think it is. I guess if it doesn't get better I'll know lol. Im betting on somehow pulling a specific muscle right there with the added resistance and maybe shifting at the wrong moment.

I am sorry you are in pain. Maybe you should just go to the doctor to see what they think. Be careful

If it keeps bothering you it'd be best to get it check out by a doctor. I had an inguinal hernia many years ago, had it for at least a couple years before it became a big enough issue to me that I got it repaired, but sounds like if you do have a hernia it's a different type than that.

I have a hernia on the left side of my abdomen (dr diagnosed). I've had it for almost 6 years. Due to our outrageous deductible... I asked the doc if I HAD to have surgery, she said no. But if my intestines got "caught" in it, it would be and ER visit and surgery for sure. I don't have much, if any, pain with it. Can tell if I've done too much as it will "ache" a little. I also can't lift over 15 pounds until it's taken care of... hate our insurance :P

Puhphine, my husband is an upper manager at a grocery store in a large chain in the midwest states called HyVee, he's one step down from having his own store (his goal, he loves his career). I was a Certified Nurse Aide in high school and a couple years after, but I don't think I've mentioned that on here. Sherrie, thank you. I think I'll take it easy for a few days and see if it gets better or worse. If it's worse or not better monday I'll see our doc. I biked for 20 more minutes on the lower setting and it wasn't too bad except if shifted wrong. Making me think it's more probably a strained muscle from shifting wrong.

Thanks jmb, I will for sure. Glad you don't have that anymore! I'm sorry Christy =( That is frustrating! This aches a little after the biking but not different then if I was trying to exercise with any other strained or pulled muscle. Hopefully that's all it is =p

I have a small bellybutton hernia that doesn't hurt at all. My doctor said as long as it doesn't get worse or cause problems to leave it. It's tiny the only thing that happens is my bellybutton pops out a bit when I do a sit up. So if it is painful I'd recommend to have it checked.

It is actually a little more painful this evening, but only if I cough or laugh (I've been yelling at my husband all night, he has a habitual sarcastic turn of phrase that keeps getting me, lol). That is consistent with hernias... but also consistent with an abdominal strained muscle. However, I can't find anything on just straining one abdominal muscle, rather then multiple, and this is a very precise spot that hurts. Which leans more towards hernia. From reading how it's diagnosed, I'm not sure a doctor could diagnose it adequately since I have a lot of bulge still there still from fat I'm trying to shed, but idk. The common consensus seems to be that if the hernia doesn't start to feel better with a reduction of activity then you need to go in. Since surgery is the only actual cure, it seems to only be recommended with more serious hernias. So I am just going to stop biking and give it a rest for the rest of the week. If it's not better monday I'll call.

Hope it gets better! It can heal both my girls were born with bellybutton hernias(genetic weak point apparantly) and both closed at around 6months! But keep an eye on it.

I think the pulled muscle hypothesis is more likely. Go easy on any exercise involving abs for 2 or 3 days and that pain will probably subside. :P I would probably not do 1 hour cycling until then. Maybe half an hour or so, just temporarily :)
