jessberry's Journal, 05 April 2014

It's been a week and my weight hasn't budged... I drink plenty of water, keep my carbs low, and fat high. I did have to restart my diet because I was really sick and needed some juice and soup, but I never went overboard with the carbs and it was only for a day. I know that you simply can't have a "cheat day" on Atkins, but I just feel like nothing is happening. I also realize that I need to be patient but it's very frustrating!

I do count calories in addition to keeping my numbers in check.... Should I not be doing this? Occasionally I go over my calories, but I'm not sure if it matters or not. Anyone have any tips?

Well being sick can throw off your body chemistry, so I would stick with it and see what happens next week. You may also have lost some fat and it didn't show on the scale yet because of being sick. Counting calories is a personal thing. Many people don't have to and can lose. Some people need to. You may need to experiment to find what works for you. I would stay on plan and keep going. Lot's of people go off plan once and while and do fine. There is something called "carb cycling" where you have higher and lower carb days and people still lose. So just keep going, and you will be looking great by summer.

Thank you for the advice! I was kinda thinking the same thing, but it's always nice to have other opinions! The biggest reason I count calories is because I have hypo thyroid disease and it has pretty much killed my metabolism. Was thinking counting calories would help, but I guess only time will tell.

A quick glance at your food diary doesn't reveal anything that you are eating that would be a problem. Are you on medication for your HT?

Hi Jessberry, First congrats on the weight loss you already have. You are doing great. Second Hypo (me too) can make it much harder to lose weight. When I started low-carb (not atkins) I lost abut 2 - 2 1/2 lbs a week and watched every single calorie. As I lost weight, my body slowed down and I am now in the 1 - 1 1/2 range. I find with Hypo my body will hold on to weight and then I will have this great week, and then it holds again. So with a recommendation from somewhere, I started to do measurements each week too, and I can see those results, even if I don't see them on the scale (Clothing fit can help too). Last thing, the more I "diet" and exercise the more weight I gain, not lose. So the scale can be very inaccurate. That is also a hypo trait. Not sure if you are doing a lot of walking or other activity, but it could be effecting your numbers but not your actual fat loss. Hypo sucks. And it makes losing weight harder than average. But keep it up. It comes off eventually.

cpmodem, yes, I'm on synthroid 150mcg... I want to try armour, but my endo won't let me. Rg, hypo does suck! I have put on soooo much weight since hypo symptoms began :( I think I will start measuring, cause you're right about the weight thing. Even with going to the gym 3 x week the scale won't budge!

Maybe you can try the diet if you like it but reduce the fat? I tried atkins years ago and it didnt work for me. Gave me Pancreatitis from all the fat. But others it seems to work. Try it with less fat for one week and see what happens!

Hi Jess, my boyfriend is very knowledgeable about this...he says you are on a very high dose of T4 and that implies your body is not converting it successfully to T3. he recommends you read a book called "Recovering with T3" (available on amazon). He also thinks that Armour would be much better for you as it contains T3 and T4 and if your endo won't agree, you can buy it online. Only once you sort out your meds, will your weight start to drop. Until then maintaining a constant weight is a good achievement.

Are you tracking all that you eat here? Sometimes hidden carbs can really get you. Also I would not worry about calories for now how many carbs are you eating?

Also you mentioned you are working out, are you checking your measurements? Working out can definitely slow wieght loss b/c of muscle gain, but improve inches.
