LuC2's Journal, 20 March 2014

You know, I was thinking that I have been heavy all my life. Was raised around heavy people (the thin folks were the anomalies). And have basically, lived my life around fat people and friends (though I've had a few very thin friends along the way...few and far between). I was thinking today that there are some deep-seated mindsets that I just have to change!

You might be a fat girl if your family instinctively chooses the set of seats closest to the all-you-can-eat buffet bar!

You might be a fat girl if you can count the times you've paid money for a salad entree at a restaurant (I can eat lettuce at home...right?)

You might be a fat girl if you circle the department store parking lot for 20 minutes looking for a close spot when you go buy new workout clothes!

You might be a fat girl if you can roll up to What-a-burger and place your order without looking at the board even once!

You might be a fat girl if you would have enough money to purchase a private island if you had a dime for every time someone told you, :You have such a pretty face." (Do people walk up to skinny folks and tell them they have such ugly faces? I'm just saying...)

You might be a fat girl if the elevator goes out in your office building, you have to walk up 8 flights of stairs and people think someone's positively orgasmic in the stairwell from all the heavy breathing they can hear from the hallway! (Funny now, but not when I thought I would die on the stairs and have rigor set in before someone would be brave enough to check out the sounds).

I have DONE these things (or had them happen to me)!! Do thin girls think this way!?!?! I'm tired of being fat (period). Thinking about these thoughts that so quickly enter my mind really struck me as kind of sad...then kinda humorous. So, laugh it up (at the expense of the old you), put on some exercise music and stop buying OREOS in bulk at Sam's Club (Costco or whatever)! "...be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2b). I'm ready for a new mind spiritually, mentally and physically! Done venting. As you were, Citizens. :o)

Be kind to yourself! I had to laugh though. I wonder if we lose any weight by laughing?!

Laughing does burn calories and improve health! But I agree, be kind to yourself and turn those thoughts about what you do that do not help your weight, and change them into ideas on how to improve! Tomorrow, park at the back of the parking lot, take one flight of stairs and then get on the elevator (an you could always increase the number of flights of stairs if you feel up to it), skip the fast food and buffet, get the main dish salad, etc. If you grew up with heavy people, then they trained you to be like them. Make it your goal now to undo some of those unhealthy habits! Maybe 1 step at a time, but you can do it!

Thanks, ladies, these are exactly the small incremental steps I'm taking Jeanine. I love cook so I cook more and that keeps me away from the fast foods. I do feel like there are so many obstacles to overcome...it's not just food, it really is a way of thinking. I dunno, for some reason that struck me today and I was wondering why this had to be my cross to bear. I'll get there, I KNOW I will. Today I just had to laugh at the things I've caught myself thinking!! And, yes, I can be a very harsh critic on self but I'm trying to get better (smile). Thank GOD laughing burns calories. If it added calories I'd never smile again! Have a good night, ladies.

Loved your post. I can relate. Plus I could add a few of my own to "You might ..." We all have to start somewhere to get where we want to be for ourselves, if not for our families. Dieting is hard, exercise is harder but not doing either might be worse (or kill) us in the long run. Pick your hard as the saying goes. Having a sense of humor helps with all the negativity!

This one happened maybe 10 years ago...waiting on the elevator (2nd flr) and it just wouldn't come. So, took off down the stairs got to the mid-landing and heard the bell ding...RAN BACK UP THE STAIRS to catch the elevator (I kid you not). I felt so incredibly dumb standing in the elevator riding down and puffing from my sprint upstairs -- just had to laugh at myself. Made a pact to always take the stairs 3 flights and lower. Ok, that's my last 'funny, funny, ha ha' for the night. You guys have any?

Great post! I wasn't heavy my entire life, but even when I wasn't, I didn't eat healthy. That had to change in order for me to lose weight and maintain my weight loss. When I was at my highest weight (270 lbs) I was eating relatively healthy, although high in carbs - even sugar-free desserts instead of the real thing - I was gaining weight. Switching to a low-carb, real foods diet has allowed me to lose significant weight and most of the weight that I set out to lose. But I must stick with my healthy habits forever or - I know - the weight will return. That is the key to maintaining weight loss. I even realized recently, from reading a photo quote - "Eat to live, don't live to eat" - that I now view food as fuel and eat only to satisfy hunger, which is a HUGE change for me - I used to live for the taste of food. I'm telling you this, because it IS possible to change your habits and change as a person so that you can become a thin person and think like a thin person. Use the time during your weight loss journey to change your habits, and a change within yourself will naturally and gradually happen. You all can do this!

I think I resemble some of those remarks for sure! Gave me a good chuckle though too. Hmmm. trying to decide where to buy my private island! Have a great day and keep on writing as you have a real talent for it.
