TXSnowman's Journal, 02 January 2014

UPS delivered my Tanita Scale today. Got my first look at my body fat percentage and was happy to see 19.1%. I had objectively hoped that I was around 20%, and wasn't disappointed. I found a body fat chart produced by Jackson & Pollack that shows that for my age and gender, 19.1% is the dividing line between "IDEAL" & "LEAN". I'll take it. I haven't been considered lean in a very, very long time...lol. The charts are located at http://www.builtlean.com/2010/08/03/ideal-body-fat-percentage-chart/ in case you're interested.

I always take my reading first thing in the morning, The evening ones are much nicer, but I can never get the same timing as i am late at work or have to go to gym... so to be consistent i compare the morning readings.

I'm following the guidelines that came with the scale and measuring just before dinner after a couple of hours fast.

I know what you mean. I'm down 135 lbs in 7 months and while my abs are shaping up pretty well, the lower abs have a bunch of extra skin that fortunately "hangs" out south of the waistband in my briefs. You really can't use the caliber body fat test with the extra skin, either. It will throw it off. I think that you'll have a little piece of mind once you get a professional body fat test done. That way, you'll have a baseline to compare your Tanita readings to. That being said, every calculator I've used, as well as the photos, all say that my Tanita is pretty accurate. If you don't mind, Draglist, can you tell my your waist measurement in inches?

Hi Bill, it's all about metabolism and you're in the best range! I am at 35% fat which would put me in the obese range. My water % is low and my metabolic age is pretty much same as my age so I really have to work hard on improving these two numbers. Your numbers all make sense... i would try to lower your visceral fat number that's all! I have to find my manual though cos I'm not sure now if we should go for a high number on this or a low number, but it should indicate a + or a - sign if it's good.

Swimming is the best for toning flabby skin! Try and subscribe at a swimming pool and go at least 3 times a week. If they have a steam room, sauna or jacuzzi even better, the effects on the skin are amazing! Thanks Bill for the compliment! We should all meet up in a warm country and celebrate our successes!......January 2015!

Bill, using a general body fat calculator, your body fat works out to about 19.23% with a 37" waist and a weight of 216 lb. Now that is a generic calculation, and obviously is meant to give an approximation. My guess is that if your Tanita is coming in within 3% of this, I'd use the Tanita numbers and not worry about it. No matter how your body fat gets measured you can be sure of two things: 1) However it's measured, its going to be a good approximation. 2) Its going to change due to the change in the amount of muscle you add or lose and the amount of fat you may put on or take off over the course of a week or two. I think that our best option is to use the Tanita numbers, assume that their close enough, and track them for positive or negative trends.

On this same line of reasoning, I was thinking about changing my goal weight here in Fat Secret to something a little higher. I thought that 180 lb might be a touch low in light of my waist size, bf% & current weight. But I ran the numbers through the calculator (which matches my Tanita really well), and it says that if I hit a 32" waist and weigh 180 lbs, I will be at 13.12% body fat which is right about where I'd like to ultimately get to. Therefore, I think that I'll just leave my goal alone and track my progress closely to see if the results match the prediction.

Jenfar, It would have to be the first week of January I only really work hard 100 or so days a year and those days run from the 2nd week of January to the middle of April.

I'll have to try to see where there's a sauna. I may have to drive a ways, but if it will tighten up the stretched skin, I'm all for it!

I really think that I'd just stick with your Tanita numbers consistently and track how they are working for you. If you're not dropping the fat as consistently as you'd like, you can always tweak your plan later.
