Damn supper!
I've realized my biggest dieting problem is cooking supper. Yes, I cook - my wife doesn't. There are two things that are my downfall. One is that I don't read lables or considder what I'm putting into the meal; the other is that I nibble while I’m making the meal because I’m hungry but by the time I’m done with the meal I’ve nibbled so much I shouldn’t be eating the meal!
Anyone have hints or ideas on how to avoid this?

Thanks for your comments on my journal, and so right back atcha! My husband also is the cook/chef in our house. For commonly made dishes, I add up all the ingredients he puts in, divide by serving size and then save the total calories, fat, etc. It's a pain the first time, but it's easy reference then from that point on. (It's easier for me too because I have the FatSecret Mobile application on my phone too that syncs up, and I can enter stuff in while we are in the kitchen.) I also like to nibble! What has helped me so far with that is to have a favorite piece of fruit - a nectarine, peach or banana. I am also pretty new at this -- just a month really in, so I'm really not an expert...just stuff that has helped me early on in the game.

^^ I do the same thing, i keep track of all the calories, then if i only eat 1/4 of it, I divide everything by .25 :] FS Even has it so you can set your meals if you use them commonly. I love it, makes my life easier. I know what you mean about picking at the food, I suggest drinking a biiiiig glass of water before you start cooking, that way you will be full while you cook, and by the time dinner is ready you should be hungry again :] good luck!

It worked! How sensible and easy! Last night was a marathon cooking session with lots of food passing under my nose. We have a picnic function after work so I had to cook supper and prepare nibbly foods for the picnic. I went straight to it and peeled a naartjie (equivalent to a small orange me thinks) and ate segments as I felt the urge. About half way through I was consciously restraining myself from putting things in my mouth again so I had the large glass of water. I’m proud to say that I didn’t nibble at anything and that I was then hungry enough for supper when it was done! Thank you for some really good advise!
