Hi my name is Wayne. I'm 48 years old. I live in Auburn NY with my girlfriend, her son and daughter, and my cats Boots and Grace.
Here's my history:
I was very athletic in high school- I played baseball, ran track, and played tennis for fun. My first semester of college I ended up gaining 30 lbs due to the beer consumption and the all you can eat cafeteria.
Ever since I've struggled with weight fluctuations. At age 30 I was in incredible shape, running triathlons, as well as two 26.2 mile marathons. For the past 15 years, however, I have generally eaten very poorly and have been very sedentary.
In 2005, at age 40, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. My A1C level was almost 12 and my doctor said my pancreas was in near shut down. Luckily I did not have to go on insulin but was put on an oral medication, Metformin (Glucophage), which helped tremendously. For a period I was exercising more and my numbers went down.
This past 6 months have hammered home the fact that I need to make major changes. Early this year I had spikes in my sugar in the 300's. Last month my fasting blood sugar after waking up was 210. I tried on a pair of suit pants that were 40 waist and not even close to fitting.
I started eating better and working out on August 14th. The way I feel physically and mentally has changed 100%. I have cut out virtually all refined sugar, white bread, and white rice. I stopped taking a sleep medication (Seroquel) that is notorious for weight gain and messing with your metabolism. Seroquel is an extremely evil drug!
I'm definitely a work-in-progress :) and I'm optimistic about the future. The people on FS are AMAZING and have given me tremendous support- during the good times and bad, through the ups and downs, with true compassion and a lot of humor. Good luck to everyone that is working on themselves, and feel free to contact me about anything!
