I had weight loss surgery (Duodenal Switch - www.dsfacts.com) on June 26, 2008.

Don't be alarmed by my eating habits! The DS surgery works in that we only absorb 20% of the fat we eat, so I don't need to concern myself with fat intake. If I eat 100 grams of fat, I only absorb 20 grams. It sounds strange, but I NEED to eat high fat foods just to get the proper intake.

I also malabsorb protein and carbs, but to a lesser extent. I MUST get at least 100 grams of protein a day (of which I absorb about half). Carbs are my enemy. I absorb around 60% of complex carbs and 100% of sugars. :( I try to keep my carbs under 150 grams daily. Sounds easy but it's NOT! Carbs are the DEVIL!

I lost 128 lbs by the Fall of 2009. Over the winter, I gained approximately 15 lbs back. I'm here to finally LOSE THE LAST 75!

Whats the best way to start a diet?
I agree with making small changes. One day I woke up and said ENOUGH and said I wouldn't buy this bag of pretzels that I was addicted to. The next day I decided to start drinking more water. Slowly the small changes added up to a great big change, and I'm loving the new me right now! You can do it!
