Hi FatSecret fam! I've nothing too exciting to report. I found a couple new breakfast recipes: the 90 second keto bread Kaysea shared last week, and a porridge made with mashed banana, coconut milk, and coconut flour. Both are very good and filling. I had a peanut butter sandwich for the first time since I started SCD this summer, so that was nice and nostalgic (and I stayed legal).

I made a red and black bean chili last week that was pretty bomb and I'm making a spicy red lentil soup with cauliflower, spinach, and butternut squash tonight. I'm excited to see how the lentil recipe turns out. Soups make winter so much more bearable. I also plan on making some banana bread and baked apples this week. I got so burned out with my healthy breakfast choices that I started skipping and then overeating at lunch or dinner. These new ideas will help keep me on track by starting my day off right.

I found a whiskey bar over the weekend that has an amazing selection and a bartender with great taste to make recommendations. I'm happy to find a replacement for the craft breweries I used to hang out in, but I need to learn some self control if I'm going to socialize in bars again. I'm torn, because I'd like to have a bit more of a social life, but I don't want to make a habit of over-indulging. It has a lot to do with the company I keep when I'm bellied up to the bar, I think. My former roommates, who are younger than I am and still in "party mode," visited Saturday and enabled me to drink two more whiskeys than I should have. With so many cool establishments in Indianapolis, it's hard to try and see all the new places and not get carried away. Do you have tips for staying within your limits and enjoying your favorite alcoholic treats in moderation?

I got back on my diet! And I think most of my die-off symptoms are behind me. This winter dry air and low pressure systems are messing with my head, but I feel good overall.

How was everyone's holiday? I forgot to eat lunch Christmas Eve and got hangry for the first time in a long time. My mom gets really stressed out hosting family over the holidays, so she wasn't very understanding BUT she did feed me well after that little tussle was over. There was so much good, SCD legal food around that I gave away my "emergency" snacks to my uncle who is experimenting with a new WOE. He's dropped 30# recently, too! He's simply avoiding sugar and says giving up soda was the biggest factor in his weight loss. I'm pretty proud of him for taking control of his health.

My aunt (not his wife, another aunt) is on the ketogenic diet, but she threw it out the window on Christmas. It just goes to show everyone has different levels of dedication. Progress isn't linear, and I hope in time she learns the dedication she needs to be successful. (She is pre-diabetic and obese, so her diet is for health and not vanity.)

By biggest challenge lately is knowing when to pass on the wine and whisky. They're legal on my diet IN MODERATION, but I definitely over-indulged earlier this week, and this weekend will pose another challenge with NYE and friends visiting from out of town.

I'll check back with y'all next year. May 2018 bring you much joy, laughter, warmth, belonging, and love. Oh, and tasty, nutritious food choices. ;)

I think my weight is finally settling in at 120 +/- 2 pounds. I'm fine with this. I'm ready to clean out my closet and start collecting pieces that will last me many years.

I'm navigating holiday meals, snacks, and treats reasonably well with one exception. My mom made a really yummy pumpkin pie pudding for me. It had a coconut milk base, which is fine, but she didn't realize the milk had guar gum in it and it made me pretty sick. I'm feeling better today, but I have been living with tension headaches, constipation, cramps, and bloating for days and now I have die-off symptoms on top of all of that. I need a day to rest and recover, but I'll have to make it through to Sunday for that.

The holiday pitch in at work is tomorrow, so that should be fun (not). I'm kind of dreading having to tell everyone that I can't eat what they brought. Everything on the pitch-in sign up sheet has grains, soft cheese, or sugar in it. Being on a non-Western diet makes it really hard to socialize, because our culture centers so much around food.

Does anyone have any encouragement or advice for me? This tension headache has me feeling pretty hopeless and vulnerable.

The holidays are coming! I blew my grocery budget out of the water this week, but I have so much fresh produce to show for it. I'm having to do a bit more cooking than usual this Thanksgiving to ensure I have safe, SCD legal, foods to eat. I'm making a grain-free bread for Mom's oyster stuffing and pumpkin gratin since I can't have potatoes. For my friend's dinner tonight, I'm making a Kale ceasar salad with homemade dressing. For thanksgiving with my housemate, I'm making pulled pork! with homemade barbecue sauce and coleslaw. I'm most excited about the sauce, because I sorely miss Sweet Baby Ray's and I hope I can eventually adjust this SCD recipe I found to taste similar.

In exercise news, my yoga practice has progressed to be a bit more athletic. I'm practicing three times a week now (for two weeks running, but hey, celebrate small victories), and at least one of those is an in-person instructor lead class. I do need to get some cardio in my routine, though. I jogged a short distance to grab something yesterday and was unexpectedly out of breath afterwards. If anyone has suggestions for low or no-cost cold weather cardio, my ears are open.

I hope everyone is doing well on their plans and taking precautions for the upcoming holidays!

I regret getting rid of all my "skinny" clothes that hadn't fit in a decade two years ago. Now my new wardrobe, which I invested in when I landed my first professional job, is two sizes two big. Doh! I hate shopping, and I just invested in a new furnace and AC unit which tightened my budget substantially. Hopefully I can pester people for handouts.

Diet news: I drank a beer Wednesday, because an acquaintance of mine manages my date's favorite restaurant and brought us a free round of drinks. I was pretty sick yesterday, so I definitely can't add beer back yet! I'm pretty sure it's maltose (the sugar in malt syrup/grains) that makes me sick and not gluten. I've found I can have hard cider, though, as long as it's truly made from apples and not a malt beverage with apple flavor. We have a meadery in town, so I may try that since I can have honey. Now if I can just figure out how I can get a chocolate fix....

[For those who don't know, I'm on the SCD diet and I can only have fructose and glucose as far as sugars/carbs. No lactose, sucrose, maltose, etc.]
