After trying and failing at just about every diet under the sun, I think I've finally got it right. I'm not there yet, but I'm moving in the direction of a whole food plant based diet - so vegan, but cutting out the processed food as well. I haven't completely cut out everything yet, right now I'm having dairy only as a special treat and trying to eat fish maybe once a week or once a month. I don't know if I'll ever become completely vegan, but I seem to be heading in that direction and I feel so much healthier now and the weight seems to be falling off. I'm also not as hungry as I was on other diets. I am often way under my RDI and not hungry whereas before I was clinging to every last calorie. If anyone is interested in moving to a healthy plant based diet or is curious about the links between animal products and health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and others I would suggest reading "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan and watching the documentary "Forks over Knives."

A little more about me:
I'm a teacher, or at least trying to become one. I have a Masters in Teaching and I'm licensed, but there aren't many social studies jobs in M.A. so right now I'm working as a sub.

I am genderqueer and bi, so is my spouse. We have two dogs who bring so much joy to our lives. I'm also Jewish and getting more and more involved with my temple community. That's me I guess.

Cheers :)

You lost what?!
Ha ha ha, I can't wait to weigh in at the end of the month and see where I am. I imagine I'll be somewhere close to a sperm whale's brain.

Vegan vs. Paleo
I'm type O and I eat a near vegan diet and I feel fantastic doing it. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I think the whole blood type diet is sudo-science crap. There is a notable lack of clinical trials.

Vegan vs. Paleo
I cut out meat a while ago and have more recently cut out all animal proteins after really doing my research. The ONLY nutrient that you will have trouble getting on a natural vegan diet is B12 which is the result of modern farming practices. Most milk replacements (soy milk, rice milk, etc) are fortified with B12. Just check and make sure that you have something like that or take a B12 vitamin.

A major pro is that I feel fantastic and find I have a lot more energy.

how do i add a new food that does not exist in search?
Hi, its really easy to add stuff to the data base. Go to your food log and do all the steps to type in a food. Run the search and when what you want doesn't come up go to the bottom of the section and you will see something that says "add new food." Click on that and the rest will be self explanatory. Then you can choose to share your entry with everyone and add it to the food data list. If you do share it with everyone please just make sure the info you enter is accurate. Hope this was helpful.
