July 20, 2009 -- 40 Pounds Lost (259 lbs.)
Aug. 09, 2009 -- 45 Pounds Lost (254 lbs.)

BIRTHDAY GOAL:
December 10, 2009 -- 60 Pounds Lost (239 lbs.)

I am a mom, grandmother, girlfriend, daughter and friend with an insatiable desire to learn. Spirituality and neuroscience are my two most passionate research interests, but I also enjoy humor, tiny houses, green technology, and geography. I am a writer, teacher and graphic/web designer. My other interests are cooking (no, really?!?), singing, playing guitar, and spending time with my son. I'm also fairly good at weird accents and appearing foolish. Is that a marketable skill?

Weight became a serious issue for me after the birth of my daughter 19 years ago. I can't believe I have been a mother 19 years (and she is a wonderful mother and wife, herself), but I also can't believe I have been fat for 19 years. And not just pudgy, but grossly obese. I am fortunate to not have diabetes, after all the neglect and abuse my body has suffered. God has given me another chance. My weight kept creeping up, but after hitting 299 on New Years Day, I knew it was time to change.

My daughter MelbaA encouraged me to come here. Everyone is kind and supportive. I want health desperately. One of the best ways to love God is to serve others, and I am sure it is the service aspect of places like FatSecret that make them so successful. People are not designed to live in isolation. So, we come to places like this to help one another and seek support. It is good. Like most of you, I have had my share of hardship and suffering. Now it is time to reclaim my God-given right to be healthy.

Not technically a diet question - husband troubles
Sweetie, you are only 52 years old, still young and vibrant by today's standards. In my opinion, you should let him "do his thing" and go, but determine that you are going to aggressively get your health 100% back, lose the weight, and treat yourself to a FABULOUS make-over. I'm not kidding about that last one. My divorce in 2002 was very hard. One of the nice things I did for myself was save $50 a month for six months while I finished a post-graduate program, and then I treated myself to a make-over. At that time, I weight much less than I do now, and I felt terrific after the make-over. The fact that your husband is presently incapable of recognizing what a gift he has in you is NOT your problem. Let him go the way he wants. One day, he will try to weedle himself back into your life and then you must decide if you will let him. I believe in marriage and fighting for them, but you can not control him. Therefor, focus your attention on you for now. It's time you did.

What cartoon character are you?
Clearly, I am one of the Goofy Gophers. They were known for their excessive politeness, saying such things as "Simply capitol!" and "Oh, indubitably!" The ridiculousness of their over-politeness always prevents them from finishing a task. Growing up in Detroit, I was accused of being too polite. Mothers loved me, ha-ha. Yes, unfortunately, when I would visit my friends, I often heard their mother's quietly tell them to "act right like that girl Britt." Teacher's Pet x 5 Million Sparkly Personality Points = Blech. (They didn't know how defiant I was at home, wha-ha-haaa!) Still, I think it is good to be polite and kind, even though I sometimes let my inner Geeky Goofball out.

Splendidhammer, your character is perfect for you. You're right: People often undervalue fat people and assume they are less capable. But then, over time, they see how sizzlin' amazing they are and change their tune. Uh, I assume you have seen the Ask a Ninja series? Ooooh, man, that guy cracks me up. I haven't watched it in a year. How terrible! 'spose I should relive the Ninja glory days. Wanna see? Oh, and Divided, I love Pinky and the Brain. One of my faves!

Oh, and Ninjas LOVE poetry: SEE IT.

Do you crave sugar?
Sugar is my crack. I crave it constantly, especially when I am feeling sad or stressed. It immediately calms me down. Unfortunately, it is also a depressant.

My solution is agave nectar (syrup). I mix 1 tsp. agave nectar with 1 tsp. almond butter and eat it SLOWLY, savoring every bit. It feels indulgent but keeps me on my diet.

Agave nectar has a low glycemic index and one teaspoon serving equals a free food. Two servings or two teaspoons equals 1/2 a carbohydrate exchange.
