Check out "Grain Brain" by Dr. Perlmutter. Both books concentrate on the negative side effects of grains & gluten. I've had similar success to you after I went down to <80 grams of carbs per day.

Ann, there are days I fall off the wagon and eat way more carbs than I should. My b/s always skyrockets when I go above about 120 grams in a day.

I have had Type II for about five years. My b/s levels would go through the roof with that many carbs in a single meal. At about 60-80 grams per day (eaten evenly through the day), my b/s stays normal.

Consequences of going too low on carbs and calories
For the past 6 weeks I have been trying to stick to a diet of about 80g of carbs per day (or less). Carbs are horrible for you, especially if you have Type II Diabetes, as I do. I eat at least 80 grams of protein a day and stay right around 1,500 total calories. This is a diet that my doctor recommended, and which I read more about later in a book by Dr. David Perlmutter. I am now the lowest weight, and feel better, than I have been in 20+ years.

220 grams of carbs per day is a ton! Seriously, carbs are the biggest hindrance when it comes to weight loss.
