I originally tried the Atkins diet back in June of 2001 when (coincidentally enough) I weighed in at 162.5lbs -- the most I had ever weighed. With a combination of Induction and some pretty serious weight training and cardio, I dropped down to 131lbs (18% body fat) a little less than one year later. At 34 years old, I was in the best shape of my life!

Fast forward to 2007... I was unexpectedly laid off work, so I decided to go back to school and get a couple of degrees. A couple of months before my graduation, we bought our first house. Talk about STRESS! Now comes 2010 with a *horrible* job market, no work to be found, and more stress. I guess it shouldn't have surprised me to find my weight creeping back up.

Finally, in October of 2011 I found out I needed shoulder surgery on my right (dominant) shoulder. During the Pre-Op physical, I discovered that I again weighed 162.5 and my blood pressure had skyrocketed to 159/89! After surgery, being doped up on pain medications for 6 weeks and constantly feeling nauseous helped me drop back down to around 152lbs, but no matter how much I tried I could NOT break the 150 barrier...

It was then that I decided to go back to the diet that had worked so well for me before, and here I am! The Monday after Superbowl Sunday (Februray 6, 2012) I began the Induction phase of my return to the Atkins lifestyle. Here's hoping it goes as well this time around as it did last time!

I see sodium though the roof!
I see the same thing, time and time again. With 95% of the problem coming from processed foods. Folks complaining that they're not losing, even though they're "following the diet to a T" when they're really not... It's not surprising why they're not losing when they're consuming upwards of two to three day's worth of sodium every day. I really wish fatsecret would have sodium tracking set as a default. It might really open some people's eyes.

Adkins Q
You got it! My percentages are 60-70% fat, 20-30% protein, and 10% carbs. Since everyone's body and metabolism is different, the daily calorie total in order to lose weight will also be unique for each individual. The 1500-1800 calorie range stated in the book is a good guideline. Just be sure to get your Base Metabolic Rate calculated and try not to go below that number, so you don't trigger that "starvation mode" slowdown of your metabolism. AWESOME job losing 30lbs in 6 weeks!!!!! Keep up the good work!

Frustrated!
Sometimes we can think we're following Atkins Induction phase to a T, but in reality it's not always the case -- and that can cause frustration, confusion, and lowered weight loss than what we've come to expect.

Like someone mentioned above, berries are not allowed until Phase 2 (Ongoing Weight Loss), and Pinot Grigio (or any other alcohol, for that matter) is not allowed until you're off Induction. Alcohol will kick you out of Ketosis for sometimes up to a week, depending on the individual.

Also, please try to eat more calories. You're (on average) getting WAY below what your body needs just to survive! Your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the MINIMUM amount of calories you should be consuming each day in order to NOT throw your body into starvation mode -- which will slow your metabolism down as much as 40%!

Go to this LINK and it will calculate your BMR for you. Then shoot for at least that many calories per day.

Your percentages of fat/protein/carbs looks good! I think if you just make a few tweaks to your menu and add some calories, you'll be surprised at how the weight will start coming off. You CAN do it! Very Happy
