Hi, my name is Amber.
I'm Texas born and raised, and definitely pround of it.

I started my diet last year as my 2009 New Year's resolution. Though for the first couple of months I didn't get real serious with it until I got out of school for summer. I started my diet weighing in at 220lbs. and have lost about 75lbs. since then. Even though my original goal was only set at losing 30lbs. I changed it a couple of times. I finally settled with my goal of having a healthy BMI, rather than just an exact weight. I am happy to say that I went from a size 16 to a size 6 in just one year's time, but I couldn't have done it without the help of my mom.

As of the beginning of this year (2010) I have unofficially gone of maintenance to keep the weight off. I still plan to record my calories every day, and plan to do so possibly for the rest of my life, or until I just decide not to do it anymore. I plan to start exercising more to try and remove the rest of the flab from my body and tone out.

As of right now, I am helping my dad lose weight in the same fashion that I have. If anyone has questions about my dieting and exercising, feel free to ask, as long as its not too personal. Because of my dieting journey, I have even taken interest of looking into being a dietician, though nothing is certain yet.

My Journey

220 - Jan. 1st 2009
215 - Feb. 2009
210 - April 2009 ?
205 - June 2009
200 - July 1st 2009 *halfway there*
195 - July 12th 2009
190 - Late mid July [first goal]
185 - August 5th
*180* - August 14th [second goal]
175- Late August (had exact date but forgot it.)
170- September ?
*165*- Late September/Early October? [third goal]
160 - October?
155 - Early November?
150 - Late November/ Early December?
145 - Late December [Sorta Final Goal?]

Yeah, so I haven't kept up with this as well as I had planned. Ha ha.. just look at my weight line chart thing.

Completely lost :(
If I were you, I would focus more on getting your cholesterol under control first before targeting weight loss (though both of them can go hand in hand). I would agree with the subtle dietary changes as a good way to go, as drastic changes can be hard on the body and often lead to a quick loss of motivation.
As a nutrition major in college, I know some dietary changes that could help you to lower both your cholesterol and weight, but please note I'm not a professional (yet).
Fiber has been known to help lower cholesterol levels, so getting more fiber in your diet from fruits and vegetables would be a good course of action. This will also help you to feel fuller longer and will provide a good source of nutrients. Whole grain products are also beneficial as well (that's why cheerios have such a good rep for lowering cholesterol). Also, you may want to lower your intake of animal products or choose leaner options. This would include dairy products, eggs, and meats. (I apologize ahead of time for the assumption that you do eat animal products if you are a vegetarian.)
I hope that this advice will help. And good luck! = ]

Fat Gram Concern
Your ideal fat intake should be 20 grams or more. You need at least 20g a day in order for your body to absorb vital fat-soluble nutrients. For protein, a good rule of thumb is 0.8g/kg of bodyweight. And you need at least 130 grams of carbs for essential body function. If you are watching percentages:
10-35% of daily kcal protein
20-35% of daily kcal fat
45-65% of daily kcal carbohydrates

I am a nutrition major and this information comes straight from my textbook.

What do your kid's eat?
I guess my situation is a little backwards, because I'm the kid of the household, although I'm 17. However I do most of the cooking during the week because my mom works late. Originally it was just me who was dieting, and later on my mom. I often would make my own meals seperate from my parents, but that became troublesome after a while.

So me and my mom worked out a way to eat the things we normally eat, but healthier by substituting common unheathy things with a healthier choice (ex. ground turkey instead of ground beef, or fat free milk instead of 2%). That way we could eat the amount of calories to stay within our counts, and my dad wouldn't complain about eating "healthy foods". A lot of the time he couldn't even tell the switch.

The basic thing we do is to all eat the same thing, but different sized portions. I typically try to make something I know we all love to eat, though sometimes someone has to settle. Try slowly introducing new foods. I never knew how closed minded I was about certain foods until I went on a diet. Now I'm eating food I would've never ate before, and I love them. Plus they're good for my health.
