I'm a 42-year-old mom of three whose weight had been steadily creeping up ever since kiddo number one. I can't even really blame pregnancy since we adopted #1 & #3. :) A few years ago I was diagnosed with very high blood pressure which I am currently controlling with meds.

In April 2014 I found some long-lost motivation and have been doing really well since then. In the past, I've had the most success with simply tracking/counting calories, so I'm combining that with making better nutritional choices (more whole foods, less processed foods) and increasing physical activity (mostly walking at this point.)

Fatsecret has been instrumental in helping me stay on track and I've lost 16 pounds so far. My blood pressure is creeping down and I'm hoping that we'll be able to decrease my meds later this summer. Here are my goals, mini & otherwise:

Starting weight - 191 pounds (37.3 BMI - obese class II)

Check! 1st mini-goal - 170 pounds (33.2 BMI - obese class I)
2nd mini-goal - 150 pounds (29.3 BMI - overweight)
3rd mini-goal - 125 pounds (24.4 BMI - normal)
Final goal weight - 115 pounds (22.5 BMI)
Mini health goal - decrease BP meds at 6/27 appointment No dice. :(
New mini health goal - decrease BP meds by end of 2014
Main health goal - normal blood pressure with no meds

Second month, only 1 lb lost
Some ideas: Keep a cooler in your truck with raw fruits and veggies, hard boiled eggs, etc. Keep nuts portioned out. Nuts plus fruits/veggies could take the place of some meals, saving you time, money & calories. Almost all restaurants, including fast food, have decent salads and/or soups. Order salads or steamed veggies for sides instead of starchy breads/rice/potatoes. Manage portion size when you eat out. If you're ordering something that will keep, box up half before you start eating. If not, ask for a smaller portion or set half aside. I hate to waste, but I'd rather do that than eat more than my body needs. I'm fortunate to be home & able to cook most of the time, but these are tips I use when we're on vacation or road trips. Hope there's something in there that helps!

Salad dressing
I prefer my salad dressing in small doses and have found that it's easiest to accomplish that by using a 5ml (needle-less) syringe to disperse it evenly over my salad. One teaspoon is 5ml and that's all I usually want unless my salad is unusually large.

I'm hungryy
I've only been working at this for about two months (this time!) but I made the decision early on that I wouldn't eat anything after dinner. (I also try to eat dinner fairly early (5-ish.) I am hungry by bedtime nearly every night but have been making myself power through it. I think I've convinced myself that the "hungry" is good. It is my body chewing up my fat and spitting it out. Ha! Smile

Fortunately it doesn't seem to affect my sleep, so I can get away with it. I have a friend who always has issues at night when she's dieting because she can't get to sleep when she's hungry. So my way won't work for everyone, but if you can convince yourself that hunger is your friend, all the better. Wink

Why would you eat nuts?
I second what notlivingonramen said. I portion out almonds into snack-size ziploc bags so I don't overindulge.

One of my favorite & most satisfying snacks is 1/2 serving almonds & 1/2 serving chocolate chips. Hits the fat/protiein/carb cravings all at once. It's not a lot of volume, though, so I eat them slowly & with lots of H2O. Smile

I buy the almonds in bulk, so my little almond/chocolate snack costs less than a quarter. Now, hubby inhales the almonds (and everything else and is a stick-man) so they aren't cheap to have lying around, but they are cheap *for me*.
