I love being outside, but living in TX with the intense heat and length of the summers has taken a toll on my outdoor spirit. I grew up in CT and have not become accustomed to the weather despite living here almost 10 yrs. When I do get outside, I love going for walks with my son and our dogs. I love swimming and biking, and wish I could live in a more bike-friendly area.

I was able to lose ~20lbs on FatSecret by counting calories and exercising regularly, but then I went through a rough divorce & depression. I actually lost 10lbs because the only meal I ever ate was dinner for with son. I liked the number on the scale, but looking in the mirror I saw that it was not healthy weight loss.

Now I'm trying to get back on track. I felt great when I was eating healthy & going to the gym every day and I want that feeling back. I immediately gained back my 10lbs divorce loss which was expected & now I'm trying to make healthier food decisions. My biggest problem is that work & my son leaves me with no time for the gym so I'm trying to revamp my exercise routine with at home workouts or outdoor activities I can do with my 3yr old & still get an intense calorie burn. I'm finding it's extremely hard to stay motivated to workout at home, but if I want to stay fit I have to find a way.

being the fat kid
I remember exactly when I went from being the skinny dancer girl in the 5th grade to the overweight giant by 8th grade. We moved from CT to KS and I no longer walked everywhere. My parents didn't really think about healthy living. My dad was always a "meat & potatoes" guy who skipped breakfast & usually lunch, and because he never gained weight he thought he was healthy. And my mom always had excuses as to why she was overweight & she still has the same excuses 20 yrs later. I was lucky in that my friends never gave me a hard time about my weight, but my mother was horrible to me. She would tell me that I shouldn't wear certain clothes because of my thunder thighs, but would refuse to buy me anything new. For years I wore my brothers hand-me-downs because they were the only clothes that fit properly (luckily the 90s grunge style was in fashion). My mom was convinced that if she was just mean enough & told me how disgusting I was, I would get the message. She never encouraged healthy behaviors or led by example. It wasn't until I joined the Navy that I learned how great it feels to be healthy, but by that time I had to reverse 18yrs of bad habits. It's a very slow, ongoing process, but I remain optimistic.

As a mother myself now, I lead by example. I was overweight before my son was born, but I'm doing everything I can to show him how to live healthy now. At 4 yrs old, he's right on track. His favorite snack is cherry tomatoes & helps me cook so I know he's learning healthy habits. I can't say it enough: If you are a parent, yelling or insulting your kids is the WORST thing you can do for them. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. If your child is obese before they're old enough to buy their own snacks, there is no one to blame but yourself. I share custody with my ex-husband & I know he's not as keen on healthy living, but I'm also confident that if I continue to teach & encourage my son, those days he's with his father won't throw him completely off track & he'll maintain good habits.

veggie dip
Black bean dips with veggies are delicious & add some complexity to a simple snack. There are a lot of recipes out there, but for a quick fix blend beans with cumin, cayenne, lemon & lime juice.

yoga
I love yoga. It's a great workout & can help you relax. Stress is not a friend to weight loss or health. I definitely recommend giving it a try.

what about fasting? good or bad?
I support fasts for religious or spiritual purposes, but not as a weight loss method and there are definitely limits. The willpower to fast is no different than for anything else. The stronger you belief that what you are doing is the best thing for you, or will somehow promote your goals, desires, etc., then the easier it will be to continue doing it.

Calories in absence of Carbohydrates
Candida is a common fungus in you intestine, everyone has it. If you're having a problem with candidasis, I would talk to your doctor. If your interest is in more homeopathic approaches, then yes, you can cut back on some carbs, like bread, alcohol, sugars. I'm not a big fan of any no fruit diet, because of the nutrients (vitamins, antioxidants, etc.) that fruits offer, but again, talk to your doctor.

I've never heard of a candidiasis treatment that goes to the extreme of no carbs. Vegetables shouldn't be a problem and I think quinoa is ok, and unlike Atkins, which leans towards a higher fat content, there are a lot of fats, oils, and cheeses that can cause candidiasis flare ups. Talk to your doctor.
