My name is Kelly, I'm 51 years old, happily married, and recently retired. I'm 5'7" so my perfect weight would be 135. We'll see how low I can go! 150 would suit me just fine!

I started my journey on the South Beach diet 12/24/07. It has been life changing for me! I had reached my highest weight of 191 and was feeling really lousy both physically and psychologically. I hated the way I looked but couldn't figure out why I couldn't stop eating! It seemed like the bigger I got the more I ate and the more miserable I became. One day while thrift shopping, I came across the South Beach Diet book and decided to buy it. I started reading the book and it all began to make sense. I decided to give the diet a chance and it worked! No more terrible cravings and I felt very satisfied with the foods I was eating. I never really felt like I was on a diet. It has changed my life. My husband has lost about 30 pounds. We have adapted well to this new way of eating and it has changed the way we both look and feel.

For exercise, my husband and I play golf, walk around our subdivision, and have now joined the gym.

My favorite quote: "The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want the most for what you want now." --Zig Ziglar

Lab report for lipids after 6 months on South Beach:

Cholesterol, Total 185 Limits 100-199
Triglycerides 100 0-149
HDL Good Cholesterol 67 H 40-59
VLDL Cholesterol 20 5-40
LDL Bad Cholesterol 98 0-99

Needless to say, I am very pleased. In May 2007, my triglycerides were 452 and my total cholesterol was 241. Quite an improvement!

Not technically a diet question - husband troubles
I left my husband after 21 years together. It was the most difficult time of my life. My husband started coming around about 2-3 months after I left but by then it was too late for me. I gave it all I had before I walked out the door. I hope you can find a way to work through this. If he won't get counseling, maybe you should. At least you can say YOU tried.

Preparing and serving foods tailored for someone with IBS
Thanks for the wonderful article. I know most of this from doing a lot of research for my condition but I definitely could use a reminder. I have suffered pretty bad for about 3 days now after eating bad foods. I'm giving up carbonated beverages, coffee, and definitely fried foods. I saw my GI yesterday and he is recommending I try Align for one month. "Align is the #1 Gastroenterologist-Recommended... probiotic supplement that helps you build and maintain a stronger, healthier digestive system." I told him that I have tried probiotics but he is insistent that this one is different because it has Bifantis. "In two separate studies, Bifantis was clinically proven to help build and maintain a healthier digestive system by defending against this full range of digestive episodes.* I'm hoping it's the answer but I know I have a lot of control if I just eat the right foods.

IBS ... do you have it?
What works for me is staying away from foods high in fat and sugar. It is important for me to have enough fiber in my diet as it helps control the diarrhea AND constipation. As for Crohn's Disease, I guess I have been very lucky. It's one of those things that can be very severe or very mild. Although I had a severe episode and thought I was doomed for life, I've been very blessed with a long remission. It's important not to dwell on the illness and keep a positive attitude. Having IBS makes it hard to know when it's CD or IBS affecting my tummy. My GI keeps a good check on me though so I rest easy knowing it's all ok. When my IBS was at its worst, I took Colestid and it did the trick. Colestid is a medicine which absorbs bile acids from the intestines. In most people bile acids are absorbed after digestion, but if you have had your gallbladder removed you may produce too much bile and need extra help from medications. In my case, having intestinal surgery caused too much bile.

IBS ... do you have it?
I have CD and had emergency surgery about 12 years ago to remove part of my colon and small bowel. I now suffer from IBS as a result of the surgery. What I eat makes a HUGE difference in how my stomach acts. Stress will certainly aggravate IBS but I don't have much stress in my life since my kids are grown and I retired! BTW, I've been in remission for 12 years. Biopsy confirmed my diagnosis of CD but I don't suffer from it now. Hope it stays away! Smile

Changing your mind can change your body, too
Here's a good article I read on MSNBC today. Thought I would share the link with everyone.
