Hermiones Mom's Journal, 24 July 2015

Oy. Last night I went with a friend to Sunday Dinner Club, a pop-up restaurant we patronize. It was Thai night, and we had gone over the menu with them pretty carefully, and they made a lot of adjustments to my plates (no wheat noodles, no mango, etc.), but I think maybe there was enough fish sauce (with soy)that the wheat got to me, because I am not feeling well at all. But the food was really delicious. I've had more than one episode though where I believe that soy sauce as an ingredient bothered me, so I need to be much more careful about this. Unfortunately, because I keep reduced-sodium, wheat free soy at home, I sometimes forget about the fact that others don't use this safer product. Very aggravating. Takes all the fun out of eating out!

Sorry you feel bad. MSG is another thing to watch out for in the restaurants. I don't feel well eating soy either. I try not to use it but ... as you say .. it's in the food sometimes.

Thanks everyone. Mom2Boxers -- I can't eat MSG at all. It REALLY makes me sick -- but I don't think in this case that would be a problem. These are high-end, health-conscious chefs who would never think of using MSG. Each night they only accommodate 24 people with a fixed menu, and yet they are willing to recrank dishes to meet my dietary requirements. So I really trust them. But I'm very suspicious of fish sauce -- it's in just about everything Thai, so I think if I have a whole menu of dishes, I'm likely to have consumed more wheat-infused soy sauce than I should. I'll recover. My new routine is that I give it 24 hours, and if I'm still running to the bathroom midday tomorrow, I'll take an Imodium. The Drs. don't really want you to take the meds regularly; you're supposed to control the problem with diet. But since I'm being pretty good with the diet, I think it's OK if I have to take one pill every three weeks to a month. I managed to get through 3 weeks in Switzerland and France without ever having a problem, so I must be doing something right.

I can't do the MSG either, asthma and migraine trigger. The fish sauce I use has no msg and I do not believe it has wheat but not sure am at work.

Just checked the fish sauce I have at home, and it's basically anchovy extract -- so no wheat there. So who knows? -- it could just be that there was enough wheat-infused soy sauce in the various dishes that it got to me. It's just impossible to tell when you eat something with multiple ingredients. How can you possibly know after the fact what made you sick? Still, the food was so delicious I don't regret eating it, and maybe that's the point: I have to get used to the fact that my new normal is that occasionally I will go AWOL and eat something totally delicious and pay for it for a day. This discussion is making me hungry. I'll have to have my afternoon snack soon.

MMM wheat makes you sick? I just looked at the 2 brands I have one is a very light sot the other a darker on by SWAN (popular brand in Oriental Stores and many say the best) they both do have some wheat. My fish sauce is anchovies.

Most soy sauces have wheat. I am continually amazed at what contains wheat. My boys have Celiac and we almost never eat out anymore.

This is probably going to sound dumb. How do I post my own message? I Am so not up on this stuff. Hate admitting that lol

For wheatless soy sauce, use tamari. It's sold right next to the soy sauce at the store. If your going out for Asian food, put some in a container and bring it with you.

you would also have to request soy sauce not be used while cooking. I cook a lot of oriental and it's added during the cooking process and often marinating meats or veggies prior to cooking. You could control that if you cook it at home and use alternate ingredients. Many restaurants will omit the msg and there is actually a mushroom seasoning that can be used instead of msg that adds a nice flavor. I use the all natural mushroom essence seasoning instead of salt after I cook beans, it makes them so good.

I use reduced sodium wheat-free tamari at home. I am going to talk to the chef at the Japanese restaurant where I like to eat to see if I can get things made wheat-free. If not I'll have to give up on that too. I have eaten Thai several times since all this started and didn't have problems because soy sauce is not that prominent an ingredient. Luckily I am not celiac so if I mess up I might be uncomfortable but I'm not doing damage to myself.
