Are you working out? It has to be muscle gain
27 Feb 14 by member: JessPuente
I agree with JessPuente it could be muscle and I want to add maybe its a cycle thing? Not to put TMI out there but when my "friend" is coming to town I always gain 2-3lbs. Don't give up girl you got this!

probably water weight-it happens to us all and it is so frustrating. Keep it up. You got this!

i typically retain 10-12lbs every...cycle...haha. my rings dont fit and my pants are tight and everything sucks, but then at the end of the week im back to normal.

It is frustrating I know! The same thing was happening to me and someone suggested that my protein and fat were too low. I upped both of those numbers and I've seen the weight start to come off again.

Well my "friend" ended Tuesday and the only thing I do a the gym is treadmill (going today in fact), because I don't want muscle mass yet until I drop more weight. And if it's water gain, how do I get rid of it? I've been making sure my protein and fat are high too, so I don't understand why such a gain. Salads, fish, and chicken for staple meals and nuts for snacks. Maybe I'm supposed to be fat, cripes! This better change real soon

I'm not giving up, that's for sure. I'm actually loving the taste of real food over processed foods. I will admit I do miss pasta but then I remind myself that it's a lot of what contributed to my weight gain. But I'm on week 3 and and have only lost 5lbs... unacceptable. Especially when I've been so disciplined

Oh and then I see on the news this morning (confirming what someone had told me the other day) that the calories you see burned on a treadmill may be false anyway! All that work for a lie? I'm a little bitter today, sorry friends ;(

Thanks, all. I think when I see that it's working so well for others quicker than it is for me, I start to question the whole thing. I thought maybe because I'm almost 48, or I have zero metabolism, or.... whatever. Just wish I'd see better results

I was so heart broken when my trainer weighed me last night after 6 days of starting a new gym, and I only lost 2lbs from when he weighed me a week ago. Until he took my BF percentage that is. I lost 1% body fat, he did the math and said that meant I lost 6lbs of pure body fat and gained 6lbs of muscle. It made me feel sooooo much better about myself! I don't focus to much on what the scale says now, I now focus on the BF percentage.

That's great, Jess!!! But like I said, I'm not gaining muscle, only doing cardio right now. For lunch I had a power spinach chicken salad from Panera and I feel like I ate a 5 course meal and bloated. I can't help but wonder if I'm doing SOMETHING wrong, but how is that possible when I'm eating so healthy?

There are a whole bunch of reasons why you might have a gain. Low carb pushes water out of the cells so you are also more susceptible to water weight fluctuation. Premenapausal can also make you susceptible to bloat (i don't know if you are). Google "why the scale lies" for insight. Hormones can really mess with the scale. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water and watch your sodium intake. And 5 pounds in 3 weeks after age 40 is a great loss. A pound or two a week is probably what you should expect. It may not be what you want, but the older you get the harder it can be to get off. Just keep plugging away. It looks to me like you are doing everything right. I wish I lost as fast as you, lol!

I don't think you're eating enough calories. You should eat at least 1000 calories, 1200 if you're exercising. Strive for -500 net calories per day (calories in - calories out = net). If you're eating under 1000 calories your body is in starvation mode. From the look of your diet calendar I think that is the case for you.

Also be careful of salad dressings, either get low fat or get them on the side and only use half. Not sure what dressing you had on your Panera salad? It might be what is making you bloated.

Joy. I had a look at your food diary. Are the 25th and 26th dates complete for intake? This may kind of sound crazy to you, but you may want to figure out your maintenance calories and hit them for a week. It lets your body reset. It seems it feel it's not having to fight you on the weight loss. It will also help you to relax and get into a mindset where you know the diet is not forever. Stress releases cortisol which tends to fight both weight loss and muscle gain. Remove the stress for a week at maintenance and then get back on that horse? It's not muscle gain. I'd kill for a 3 pound muscle gain, but if I'm lucky, I may gain a pound a month with concerted effort. It is likely water, but if you're finding you're just not losing, I'd strongly suggest a week at maintenance calories and then start it again. You'll see a gain of a few pounds over that time, but the weight loss usually accelerates some and you get rid of those pounds quickly. Send me a PM if you decide you want to try it. I can show you how to figure your maintenance calories.

Calories burned on treadmills and any other machine that shows that will be inflated. They include your basic metabolic calories burned during the time plus the energy you use. Why do that do that? Because getting someone on a treadmill for 10 minutes and showing them they burned 300 calories is way better for sales than saying you burned 100 calories. They're not lying. They telling you the total calories burned by your body (not just the exercise) for that time period. I got on a rowing machine once, rowed for 30 seconds and stopped to adjust the foot straps and noticed I'd already burned 50 calories. YEAH RIGHT!

Northern Musician is right, your calories are too low, up them with protein intake. Weight workouts to build muscle help too. Lean muscle mass burns calories.
