Musings over Coffee....

1. Oh, what a sense of smell I have! Any other Atkins-ers experienced this? I've always had a pretty keen sense of smell, but now it seems that if I enter into a 50 foot radius that contains sugar/bread/carbs, I can smell it. It is somewhat of a "spider-sense" only with carbs. It really amazes me how strong it is. Also, related to this topic, I find it interesting that when I am not eating processed crap, just how wonderful things taste (that didn't really have any taste before). It saddens me to know that this is the vicious cycle we Americans are in: eat processed crap/fast food->real food has no taste->eat more processed crap/fast food.

2. Oh, what some support can do! At-home support that is. Not that a good bra wouldn't qualify under this category... When I started Atkins last fall (the first time), I did really well and was very proud of myself. BUT, I wasn't very successful, as far as the scale goes. I had tons of energy and felt empowered--except when my hubby wanted to go out for Italian food or my in-laws baked a cake. I never made it down to the weight I am at now (134!!), and I did it for a couple months! Here I am, two weeks in, and I have lost more than I ever did the first go! The only change?? The husband is now on board. He's doing Atkins as well (and has lost over 10 pounds already!). I am so proud of us. We are becoming healthy together and we are succeeding! It has also been fun coming up with new recipes together, and it turns out that my husband must have been a Chef in another life! He is awesome in the kitchen and has found a new interest! Win-win for me--he's like my own Personal Chef...I'm like a celebrity now. :::smiles and waves:::

3. Uh-Oh, I've been cheating and didn't even know it. As I was perusing some of the forums this morning, I came across a topic discussing Crystal Light and its Atkins-ness. What did I find? I've been cheating, and I didn't even know it. I've been drinking my 8 glasses of water everyday, BUT they just so happen to contain 1/2 a packet of crystal light. Why is this a problem? Well, for one, I haven't been counting it as a carb. Each serving contains zero carbs, but I suppose I am supposed to count each serving as "1" carb like I would diet soda? I have mixed thoughts on this: (A) It obviously has not affected my weight loss, and if I slowed/stalled I could discontinue this practice. (B) It is helping me get my daily water in. (C) It mean's I'm a cheater. (D) It has that evil aspartame in it. So now, I am torn between what I should do....I mean, I've already completed two successful weeks of induction with it....right? I feel a little guilty now for not being a good Atkins-er.

Manda I know your pain. Everytime I walk into the stupidmarket, I can smell the bakery as soon as I walk in the door. Than think about the taste of fresh bread.. I hate going shopping now, but there was something back when I was in highschool called carb burn I think where you were allowed to have 142 carbs a day.. I lost a ton like that and majority of the time kept it way under that..

I'm pretty sure when dealing with sweeteners, you add it in as a carb for each serving just to make sure. Don't feel guilty if sweeteners are not stalling you. I would necessarily call you a cheater. I think cheating is more like purposely eating something you know is not acceptable. As for the processed food, the reason why it's soooo addicting and tasty is because of the preservatives and additives like MSG. It's funny because once I stopped consuming junk, my taste has completely changed. Anything white, fried, or processed tastes horrible to me.
