ctlss's Journal, 03 April 2013

I wanted to stop in and touch base, and say thank you for all the kind comments on the April 1st entry. Mom is still in the hospital. She has been diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (lack of blood supply and dying of the bone) in the knee joint. This may be due to an injury...they aren't sure. She is also having some seizure issues. The treatment for the Avascular Necrosis is to rest the leg and not weight bear, so she will be going to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation and therapy. The doctor has told us that it will be a long process. The hope is that with rest the blood supply that has been cut off to the bone will re-establish itself and the bone can then heal. If that doesn't happen the next course of treatment is a total knee replacement, which has it's own set of problems. I spent from 11 pm Sunday until 9 pm Monday there. I got called back to the hospital at 1 am Tuesday morning and was there until 6:30 pm Tuesday evening. I took today off and ran errands, cleaned the house, and bbq'd some meat to take with me to the hospital. I am headed back down there tomorrow morning at 7:30 so and will spend the day. I spent a lot of time on the phone today with my sibs, the nurses, the doctor, and my sons. I also did a lot of research into the Skilled Nursing Facility options for mom. She will be going back to the place where she did her rehab for the ankle replacement. It is an excellent facility. I have her little doggie at my house, and he is doing well, but he misses his mommy. This is quite hard for all of us and especially mom. Any prayers or positive thoughts would be most appreciated.

Food wise...I have done very, very well, surprisingly. Yesterday morning, after the long night, the young man who beings the trays, Lonnie (who has been serving meals to our hospitalized family members for years), brought me a complimentary breakfast of sausage, eggs, and bacon, with coffee. He also brought me a biscuit and juice, which I gave to mom. At lunch time he popped in and just "happened" to have an "extra" tray with a cesar chicken salad and SF jello. Dinner he did the same but brought me salsbury steak and mashed potatoes. I have not shared my eating lifestyle. I gave the beautiful piece of lemon meringue pie to mom, and took the salsbury steak home for the puppies, and thanked him for his kindness.

Exercise...only the walking at the hospital. My back is killing me. I am really sore and stiff from sleeping for 2 nights at the hospital (if you want to call it sleeping) on the hard couch one night, and a very uncomfortable reclining chair the next. And I haven't been home long enough to do a kettle bell workout, not that I could right now with this back. I suppose I could count the house cleaning today and the pacing while on the phone though! lol At this point I am at 9,009 steps for the day, so I consider that a win!

Well, that's about all the news that's fit to print from my corner...hope all is well in yours!!

I hate that your Mom has to go through all that. I personally know 3 people who have had the knee replacement and their take is "why did I put this off so long". Going shopping this weekend with 2 SILs One has had her knee replaced and the other has had her hip replaced. They will both outwalk me!

Buffy, thanks. Mom has had the ankle in that leg replaced already. She has issues with falling and with mobility that aren't related to the knee and she is not good at rehab. She is also 75 and has very soft bones. This makes the knee replacement a less than optimum option. Have fun shopping this weekend!! :)

Hugs to you and to your mom, Stef. I hope you both feel better soon. Great job on the steps. Sending my thoughts and prayers your way.

Stef, I hope your mom feels better soon. Even when knee replacement is one of the better options, I know that it doesn't always go smoothly. A friend of mine- who is about halfway in age between your mom and me- has been dealing with knee related issues. He's had to have replacement surgery on both knees. The surgeries were staggered, so at least he didn't have to deal with both at the same time, but one knee responded well and the other did not, so he's been dealing with complications from the more recent surgery. Also, I hope you feel better too and are able to get some rest. That was really sweet of Lonnie to take care of you guys like that. I'm glad you have help like that around to ease the difficulties that come with dealing with aging parents/ relatives. Take care and happy belated Easter! :)

Oh gosh those terrible chairs to "sleep" in! It was that way with my mom and my daughter both. I know how hard this all is. I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you and your family. BIG (((HUGS))) ~Dianna

Thinking of you Stef. Hoping things look up for mum, and hope Jacob is holding his own too. Try to look after you too. Isn't it wonderful that that young man brought you food? Some people are just so kind.

Thanks, Sandy. She is having more seizure activity, so we are adding more meds. Hoping and praying they work! Hugs!

Thanks, my sweet Is! Jake was cleared to return to work tomorrow, and is much, much better. Mom is having some issues with seizure control, so we are working on that today. Praying things get worked out and she can get transferred to the skilled nursing facility soon. Love you, my sister/friend! Hugs!

Just maybe she'll do better with rehab this time. She has you to set such a good example for her!
